A steerable electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensor system for measuring the magnetic polarizability tensor of a metal target. Instead of creating a vertical magnetic field from a horizontal loop transmitter configuration used by most prior art EMI metal detectors, the transmitter geometry of the sensor system's antenna is designed especially for creating multiple horizontal and vertical magnetic fields and for steering the same in all directions. The horizontal magnetic field (HMF) antenna has the potential advantage of a relatively uniform magnetic field over a large volume. A second potential advantage of the HMF antenna is that compared to a conventional loop antenna, the magnetic field intensity falls off slowly with distance from the plane of the antenna. Combining two HMF sensor systems creates a sterrable two-dimensional magnetic field sensor. Combining the steerable HMF sensor with a vertical magnetic field antenna forms a three-dimensional steerable magnetic field sensor system.

In one embodiment, a signal from an oscillator is applied to the series combination of a capacitor and the coil, which generates an oscillatory magnetic flux in the magnetic circuit. In another embodiment, a second capacitor is connected in parallel with a second coil which operates in a resonant or near-resonant condition responsive to the oscillatory magnetic flux in the magnetic circuit.

An apparatus for detecting ferromagnetic objects in the vicinity of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The apparatus comprises primary sensor means adapted to measure a magnetic field, arranged in communication with signal processing means configured to identify temporal variations in the measured magnetic field due to the movement of a ferromagnetic object within an ambient magnetic field and to provide an output indicative of the presence of a ferromagnetic object in the vicinity of the primary sensor means. The apparatus further comprises secondary, non-magnetic, sensor means adapted to detect the movement of objects in the vicinity of the primary sensor means in order to reduce false alarms. The output from the signal processing means may be used to operate an audible alarm, a visual alarm, an automatic door lock or a physical barrier.

The present technology involves a method and apparatus for detecting and reporting magnetic fields in the proximity of a utility meter as an approach to determining tampering of such meter. The sensitivity level of the magnetic field sensors may be adjustable allowing either remote or local sensitivity adjustments to a magnetic field sensor to compensate for variations in the electromagnetic environments of different meter installation sites. Alternatively, the output of each magnetic field sensor may be connected to the input of an adjustable threshold circuit. When the output voltage of the magnetic field exceeds a predetermined threshold voltage, a magnetic event signal is generated. Threshold adjustments to the adjustable threshold circuit may be performed locally at the meter site or remotely from a station. The output of each magnetic field sensor may be monitored by a locally or remotely programmable magnetic sensor output monitor. Such magnetic sensor output monitor generates a magnetic event signal when a predetermined number of magnetic sensors have been activated.

A motion of the induction element induces in the induction element an eddy current with a temporal characteristic that depends both on the velocity and the acceleration. A sensor element measures the temporal characteristic of the eddy current and supplies the temporal characteristic to a signal processing circuit which determines at least one useful signal that is proportional to the velocity and acceleration, respectively.

The present invention is a magnetic field detection device that makes use of a frequency characteristic affording circuit in order to selectively detect magnetic signals from a frequency domain accurately at a high level of sensitivity. The present invention has a magneto-impedance element, a detector coil and a negative feedback coil which is wound around the magneto-impedance element, and a frequency characteristic affording circuit which affords a frequency characteristics on the negative feedback signal of a negative feedback connecting an output terminal thereof with the negative feedback coil. Using filters as the frequency characteristic affording circuit, the following are possible uses of this magnetic field detection device: a geomagnet detection device for earthquake prediction (using a high-pass filter), a bill validation apparatus for vending machines, etc. (using a low-pass filter), and a magnetic oscillation detection device for a magnetic gate system (using a band-reject filter).
