An efficient digital wideband waveform generation and signal processing system for multi-beam electronically scanned antenna array (ESA) radar systems. The digital waveform generator (50) first produces a series of waveform phase angles corresponding to the phase angles of a common signal to be transmitted by the ESA. Then, for each antenna element, the waveform phase angles are adjusted to steer the beam by adding a time delay and a phase adjustment. A digital signal is then produced for each antenna element by applying a cosine function to the adjusted phase angles. In the illustrative embodiment, this is accomplished using a cosine look-up table (14). Each digital cosine wave is then stored in a serial memory buffer (16A to 16L) in preparation for conversion to digital. Each of digital signals is passed through a digital to analog converter (18A to 18L) and an RF filter (20A to 20L) at each antenna element. The resulting analog signals are each amplified by a power amplifier (22A to 22L), and then sent through a wideband circulator (24A to 24L) to an antenna element (26A to 26L). On receive, at each antenna element (26A to 26L), a wideband linear amplifier (30A to 30L) and an RF filter (32A to 32L) provide rejection of out of band signals while providing amplification and signal conditioning for the following analog to digital converter (34A to 34L). The resulting digital signals (one for each element) are sent through the (36A to 36L) which separate each digital signal into N frequency channels. A digital beam formation unit (38A to 38N) for each frequency channel then forms multiple digital simultaneous beams by combining like frequency channels from each antenna element with an added phase adjustment.

A method and a system are disclosed compensating for failed elements in an antenna array. The method assumes that at least the amplitude and, in most cases, the phase of, at least, some of the individual elements can be controlled to some extent. If one or more of the antenna array radiating elements are failed, at least some remaining elements are used to correct for this. The amplitude and phase radiation pattern of one of the failed elements is then synthesized using K of the remaining elements. The resulting excitation from this synthesis is superimposed on the failed array excitation at the positions of the K remaining elements. This procedure can be repeated for all the failed elements using the principle of superposition. The present invention is directed generally to phased array antennas. The invention allows for the realization of a low-cost, ferroelectric material loaded feed manifold for phase shifting an antenna. This type of architecture can take many forms, with the preferred embodiment being waveguide. In an embodiment of the present invention, the Ferroelectric/Paralectric/Composite material loaded feed manifold described herein may solve the space/weight problem by integrating the material into the traditional waveguide feed manifold. A feed structure suitable for receiving and routing electromagnetic energy may include a subassembly including material suitable for shifting phase of electromagnetic radiation when an electrical field is applied. Material having a dielectric constant at least one of equal to and greater than the phase shifting material may also be included.

Accordingly, power steering circuitry of the present invention is provided in a signal path to accept input signals and distribute the power of the input signal among output signals. A preferred embodiment of the power steering circuitry of the present invention provides a multiple stage configuration wherein a first stage operates to shift power and select a power bias among subsets of the outputs while a subsequent stage or stages provide further granularity with respect to shifting of power among the outputs. According to a preferred embodiment, power shifters include an arrangement of back-to-back hybrid combiners having phase adjusting circuitry disposed there between. Accordingly, a preferred embodiment of the power steering circuitry of the present invention provides a matrix of back-to-back hybrid combiners to provide desired steering of signal power.

An antenna apparatus which can increase capacity in a cellular communication system. The antenna operates in conjunction with a mobile subscriber unit and provides a plurality of antenna elements. At least one active antenna element is active and essentially centrally located within multiple passive antenna elements. The passive antenna elements are coupled to selectable impedance components. Through proper control of the passive antenna elements, the cellular communication system directs an antenna beam pattern toward an antenna tower of a base station to maximize gain, and, consequently, signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, optimum reception is achieved during, for example, an idle mode which receives a pilot signal. The antenna array creates a beamformer for signals to be transmitted from the mobile subscriber unit, and a directional receiving array to more optimally detect and receive signals transmitted from the base station. By directionally receiving and transmitting signals, multipath fading is greatly reduced as well as intercell interference. Various techniques for determining the proper phase of each antenna element are accommodated.
