The gas and the processing liquid are mixed in a mixing area below the inner cylindrical member to generate fine droplets, and the droplets are ejected from an outlet of a lower end of the outer cylindrical member onto a substrate. Charge is induced on the processing liquid by generating an electric potential difference between a first electrode provided in the gas passage and a second electrode provided in the processing liquid passage, to generate charged droplets. In the nozzle, the first electrode is isolated from the processing liquid with a simple construction, and the droplets can be charged efficiently.

As a liquid to be sprayed is supplied to the spray head, the liquid is atomized predominately due to the high voltage. The spray head is located within or closely adjacent to a gas stream flowing along a path which extends in the spraying direction, so that at least some of the atomized liquid becomes entrained in the gas stream. The gas stream has a lower velocity region and a high velocity region, of which the lower velocity region is transversally closer to the spray head.

A metal spray gun of the arc spray type has a nozzle-positioner member of electrically insulating material that is disposed between a gas inlet and an arc zone. A primary stream of gas is flowed through a through passage in the nozzle-positioner member, and seat surfaces in the through passage receive tips of individual electrically conductive contact tube assemblies that are biased outwardly away from one another. The nozzle-positioner member aligns the contact tube assemblies and configures the gas stream such that each metal wire is immediately enveloped in gas flow as it emerges from its contact tube and remains in that enveloping gas flow throughout the region between the contact tube tip and the arc zone. The spray gun produces quality metal spray coatings with lower gas pressures and has lower noise levels.

The invention relates to the production of plasma-sprayed coatings at low surface speeds and long stand off distances e.g. more than 7.5 cm. A zone of sub-atmospheric pressure is maintained through which the hot gas effluent and entrained coating powder produced by a plasma torch is caused to pass on its way to the substrate being coated. The sub-atmospheric zone preferably extends over the whole path of hot gas effluent and entrained coating powder. Apparatus is provided which comprises a plasma torch and a chamber preferably a tube together with means for maintaining a zone of sub-atmospheric pressure in the chamber. In the case of the tube this may be a spiral passage mounted in said tube which injects a sheath of gas moving along the inner surface of the tube in a spiral path.

Surface-coated components, such as contact pieces for vacuum switches, are produced by means of the method by melting open the surface of a metallic substrate (1) in a local area (15) by an energy flow (12) and combining an additive (8) with the melted-open material of the local area (15). It is intended to produce components with large areas with small outlay in apparatus by means of this method. This is attained by the following steps: Prior to melting open the local area (15), the substrate (1) is pre-heated to a temperature considerably above room temperature, but below its melting temperature. After pre-heating, the local area (15) on the surface of the substrate is melted open and the additive (8) is applied to the substrate surface in the form of a loose powder layer (10). The local area (15) melted open by the energy flow (12) is guided to and through the powder layer (10) and in the course of this powder present in the powder layer (10) is wetted or the powder layer (10) is soaked with liquid material from the melted-open local area (15), because of which the powder of the powder layer (10) is bonded with the surface of the substrate (1) and the desired surface layer (16) is formed.

A flame sprayable powder composition suitable for coating a plastic substrate comprising by weight (a) about 90 to 98% of a flame sprayable mineral powder, (b) about 1 to 5% of a nylon powder, and (c) about 1 to 5% of an epoxy resin powder. The coated plastic may thereafter be overcoated by flame spraying with conventional metal or ceramic powders. The undercoat results in a good bond to the substrate.

An arc spray gun in which the ends of two metal wires, respectively connected to opposite terminals of a DC power source, are fed to an intersection point to strike and maintain an electric arc, melting the wires. A gas jet directed at the intersection point sprays the molten metal onto the object to be coated. The wire connected to the positive terminal of the power source is of larger diameter than the negative-terminal-connected wire. Parallel guides are provided for feeding the wires through hollow electrodes converging toward the arc-melting zone, the guide path of the larger wire being straighter than that of the smaller wire.
