Productivity in electronic printer incorporating finishing activities and operating in a job streaming mode are enhanced by utilizing software to calculate and predict the minimum delay corresponding to minimum skip pitches) in successive jobs requiring finishing activities such as binding and stapling. Printing and collating of sets of original scanned documents are controlled so that collated sets are successively presented by the printer to the finisher nearly coincident with conclusion of the finishing activity being accomplished for a current job. Additional software innovations allow job scheduling for jobs involving complex pitch time delays created by scanning simplex and duplex documents returned in random order. For this case optimum delay time is the cumulative finishing hardware delays as well as imaging/paper path delays. Still another feature is a predictive algorithym which is used to increase reliability of printer components by cycling down the printer between jobs in situations where the finishing activity for a current job requires an extraordinarily long time to complete compared with the cycle down/cycle up time of the printer.

A type character is printed on a recording medium at a printing position by stopping the normal rotational movement of a type wheel at a point on the periphery so as to cause the rotational kinetic energy associated with the type wheel to pivotally move the type wheel to the printing position and impact the type character against the recording medium.

A novel printing apparatus comprises a single drive motor, rotational drive force reduction gears, a drive gear fixedly mounted on a rotary shaft and normally rotated by the drive motor through reduction gears, a base frame rotatably support the rotary shaft, a swingable support plate swingably supported to the rotary shaft, a printing drum rotatably supported to the swingable support plate and threadedly engaged with the drive gear, printing web feeding means for feeding printing web to face the drum, biasing means for biasing the printing drum in the direction opposite to the fed printing web, and novel forcible stopping means for preventing the drum to rotate around its own axis to thereby allow the drum to rotate around the rotary shaft against the biasing means while engaging with the drive shaft.

Rotatably driven type wheels carrying type characters on the periphery thereof are supported resiliently about a normal operating axis for movement to a printing position to impact a selected type character against a recording medium. The movement of the type wheel to the printing position is accomplished by engaging a relatively stationary stop member with an abutment on the type wheel to stop the normal rotational movement of the type wheel and enable the associated rotational kinetic energy to pivot the type wheel about the stop member to impact the selected type character against the recording medium at the printing position. To ensure full engagement of the stop member with the abutment on the type wheel and reduce the accompanying stresses, the stop member yieldably engages the abutment prior to stopping the normal rotational movement of the type wheel.

A printing mechanism is provided with a substantially horizontal barrel-shaped type carrier. The type carrier is rotatable by means of an articulated joint and gears on a yoke for selecting a row of characters. The yoke is rotatable on a bail by means of a pin and slot of a slider, for selecting a line of characters. The bail is moreover horizontally swingable on a carriage by a spring controlled by the line of characters, for printing the selected character. The carriage is transversely movable with respect to the platen and carries rotatably two hollow shafts driven by a pair of prismatic shafts parallel to the platen and selectively rotatable on the machine frame.
