A method of making a tie dye solution for a fabric includes adding a first predetermined weight of sodium chloride to a second predetermined weight of a dye, wherein the first predetermined weight of the sodium chloride is based on the color of the dye. The method further includes mixing the first predetermined weight of the sodium chloride and the second predetermined weight of the dye together to form a dry dye mixture, dispensing the mixed first predetermined weight of the sodium chloride and the second predetermined weight of the dye into a dye bottle, and adding water to the dye bottle having the mixed first predetermined weight of the sodium chloride and the second predetermined weight of the dye to form the tie dye solution.

A dyeing and printing system for use in color printing articles or fabrics formed from cellulose prior to dyeing. In the preferred embodiment, the dyeing system composition includes the selective use of a dye blocking print paste, a color binder print paste and a dye enhancing print paste to selectively decrease or increase the shade of the dyed portions of a cellulose article, such as a woven or knitted cotton or cotton/polyester article or fabric while, at the same time, permitting the resisted areas to be colored differently.

This invention relates to a process for the production of resists or multicolor effects on natural or synthetic polyamide fiber materials, which, to produce resists, comprises locally applying a liquid preparation wet-on-wet before or after treating the textile material with a dyeing liquor or printing paste containing at least one anionic dye, said preparation comprising one or more than one compound of formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a straight-chain or branched C.sub.10 -C.sub.24 alkyl or alkenyl radical, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each independently of the other C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, X is the radical of an anion, and the benzene nucleus A may be further substituted, or which, to produce multicolor effects, comprises locally applying one or more than one liquid preparation wet-on-wet before or after treating the textile material with a dyeing liquor or printing paste containing at least one anionic dye, said preparation comprising containing, in addition to one or more than one compound of formula (1), at least one anionic dye, and lastly subjecting the textile goods to a heat treatment to fix the dye. Excellent resists or multicolor effects are obtained by the process of this invention.

This invention provides a method for applying color to a fabric to create random dye patterns thereon. The method comprises the steps of applying at least one dye accelerant onto the fabric in a random and nonuniform manner so that the resulting fabric has random areas containing dye accelerant and random areas not containing dye accelerant; applying dye to the fabric at a temperature effective to permit rapid absorption of the dye into the dye accelerant containing areas, and less or no absorption of the dye into the areas not containing dye accelerant; and removing unabsorbed dye while inhibiting migration of absorbed dye within the fabric. The present invention also provides a method for applying color to a fabric utilizing an automated dyeing apparatus. The present invention further provides a vat-dyed fabric having differing random patterns of dye intensity of at least one color on opposite sides of the fabric.

A method of dyeing polypropylene fiber to create areas of different color on the fiber. A first dye solution containing a disperse dye and a dye-promoting agent is applied to substantially the entire surface of the fiber to cover the fiber with a first color. Thereafter, and while the fiber surface is still wet with the first dye solution, a second dye solution containing a disperse dye of a second color is applied only to selected discontinuous areas of the fiber. The second dye solution displaces the first dye solution in those areas of the fiber surface to which the second dye solution is applied. Then, the fiber is subjected to an elevated temperature high enough, and for a period of time sufficient, to fix the dyes in the fiber. Preferably, the second dye solution is more viscous than the first dye solution. After the dye fixation step, the fiber is scoured to remove excess dye. If desired, the second dye solution also contains a dye-promoting agent.

A method of producing characters, symbols, patterns (hereinafter referred to as "characters, etc.") on a thermoplastic resin molded article is characterized in that in order to produce characters, etc. on the molded article, a dye-impenetrable cover is first applied to that part of the surface of the molded article which corresponds to the characters, etc. to be produced, impregnation dyeing being then affected on the molded article surface including at least the peripheral area of the covered part of the surface by using a sublimative dye, the cover being subsequently removed, whereby the characters, etc. are produced as such.

The invention relates to a method for preventing the brightening effect of an optical brightening agent on a textile substrate comprising applying on the textile substrate a water-soluble, cationic, optical brightener quencher either before or together with a resin precursor and submitting the treated substrate to a heat treatment. This method imparts an antibrightening effect to goods when they are washed with an optical brightener containing detergent.

A tinted soft contact lens such as a hydrated hydrogel lens having a variegated iris pattern is prepared by forming an iris pattern on the lens with a viscous paste which can contain an unoxidized vat dye. The lens is treated with a developer solution to obtain a tinted lens having an iris pattern which can be clear or different in color or in hue from the surrounding iris area.

A new and unique method of producing a mosaic-like work of art on a sheet of fabric material. Once the fabric and its basic color is selected, a coating of melted wax is applied to one surface thereof. After the wax is dry, the fabric is crackled so as to form random and skewed cracks. Dye is then applied which penetrates the cracks and is absorbed by the fabric, whereby random skewed lines are left in the fabric after the wax is removed. The random skewed lines define a multiplicity of contiguous areas to be selectively painted so as to render a mosaic-like work of art.
