The present invention relates to a process for preparing a polylysine, comprising the steps of (a) heating a boiling aqueous reaction mixture comprising lysine and water in a weight ratio of 1:10 to 3:1 within 2 to 8 hours to a temperature in the range from 135 to 165 °C, and (b) keeping the reaction mixture of step (a) at a temperature in a range from 135 to 165 °C at a pressure below atmospheric pressure, wherein water is removed from the mixture, and any temperature increase is ≤ 30 °C in 60 minutes. The process is simple and suitable for large scale production of polylysine with improved yield.

The silica-coated particles show a delayed release of the expanding agent particularly in alkaline medium and at elevated temperatures. They are therefore useful in the oil and construction industry.
