An apparatus (60) and method for thermally tuning an optical amplifier comprises an optical waveguide (63) doped with a fluorescent material, a thermal device (65) for either heating or cooling the optical waveguide, and a pump light (61) for exciting the fluorescent material. The apparatus shapes, shifts, and/or flattens the gain curves of the doped optical amplifier. Thulium doped fiber is cooled to shift the gain curve into the C-band. Erbium doped fiber is heated to flatten the gain curve in the C-band and is cooled to shift the gain curve above the L-band. The apparatus similarly shapes the gain curves of other fluorescent materials. The thermal device comprises three types of optical cooling devices. The apparatus is a component in communications systems, lasers, medical lasers and the like. The method comprises either heating or cooling optical waveguides doped with fluorescent materials to achieve the desired shaping, shifting, and flattening of the gain curves.

The invention provides a selectively absorbing optical fiber that is transparent at pump wavelengths, and highly absorbing at signal wavelengths. The selectively absorbing optical fiber includes selectively absorbing species, such as rare earth ions, in concentrations sufficient to provide the desired absorbance selectivity. The fiber is useful as a fiber pigtail for pump lasers in optical amplifiers, where it can reduce the effects of multi-path interference by absorbing stray light with wavelengths in the signal band.

The method of the invention controls the acoustic waves to be guided away from the portion of the waveguide which guides the light. Thus, acoustic waves are guided into the cladding (12). A substantial reduction in the SBS effect is then realized in the core that guides light. The method of the invention is applicable to single clad optical waveguides, such as optical fibers, as well as dual clad optical fibers and other waveguides. A preferred dual clad (a.k.a. dual core) waveguide structure permits realization of a pump laser system having reduced SBS effect in the core used for guiding transmitted light to be pumped (amplified). A second core (12) guides acoustic waves outside the core (10) used for guiding transmitted light, and also guides pump light which amplifies the light transmitted in the core for light transmission. Pumping may also be assisted by cladding the second "pump" core (12) with a cladding (20) that is anti-guiding for light and guiding for acoustic waves.

The present invention provides an optical fibre having a doped silica core and a silica cladding, wherein the core is formed throughout its cross-sectional area to minimise non-uniformity ( i.e. a central dip or a spike) in photosensitivity profile of the core. The fibre according to the invention has minimal coupling of lower order modes of light propagation to lossy higher order modes and therefore reduced transmission loss.
