Abstract:
An optical stylus may be capable of providing active illumination for a touch/proximity sensing apparatus. The optical stylus also may be capable of determining a tilt angle of the optical stylus and/or an amount of pressure exerted upon the optical stylus. In some examples, an optical stylus may determine a tilt angle and/or pressure according to changes in optical flux distributions inside the optical stylus. In some examples, an optical stylus may include a deformable tip. The deformable tip and/or associated features may be capable of altering optical flux distributions inside the optical stylus in response to applied pressure and/or optical stylus tilt. In some implementations, the optical flux provided to the light guide by the optical stylus may vary according to pressure applied to the optical stylus.
Abstract:
An authentication process may involve presenting an image on a display device, such as an icon associated with an application, indicating an area for a user to touch. At least partial fingerprint data may be obtained during one or more finger taps or touches in the area. Based on a comparison of the partial fingerprint data and master fingerprint data of the rightful user, a control system may determine whether to invoke a function. Invoking the function may involve authorizing a commercial transaction or unlocking the display device. In some implementations, determining whether to invoke the function may be based on a level of security.
Abstract:
A semiconductor device comprising a second surface of a logic die and a second surface of a via bar coupled to a first surface of a substrate, a second surface of a memory die coupled to a first surface of the via bar, a portion of the second surface of the memory die extending over the first surface of the logic die, such that the logic die and the memory die are vertically staggered, and the memory die electrically coupled to the logic die through the via bar. The via bar can be formed from glass, and include through-glass vias (TGVs) and embedded passives such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors. The semiconductor device can be formed as a single package or a package-on-package structure with the via bar and the memory die encapsulated in a package and the substrate and logic die in another package.
Abstract:
This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for selecting an operational mode of a reflective display device from a plurality of operational modes that include at least one field-sequential color mode. The operational mode may be selected based, at least in part, on ambient light data. The ambient light data may include ambient light intensity data, ambient light spectrum data and/or ambient light direction data. The operational mode may be selected based, at least in part, on other criteria, such as display application type and/or battery state data.
Abstract:
A field-sequential color architecture is included in a reflective mode display. The reflective mode display may be a direct-view display such as an interferometric modulator display. The reflective mode display may include three or more different subpixel types, each of which corresponds to a color. Data for each color may be written sequentially to all subpixels of the display. Flashing of a corresponding colored light, e.g., from a front light of the display, may be timed to immediately follow a process of writing data for that color. Colors other than the field color may be used to produce grayscale. The field color may correspond to the most significant bit (MSB) and the other colors may correspond to other bits.
Abstract:
This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for glass-encapsulated microphones. In one aspect, a glass-encapsulated microphone may include a glass substrate, an electromechanical microphone device, an integrated circuit device, and a cover glass. The cover glass may be bonded to the glass substrate with an adhesive, such as epoxy, or a metal bond ring. The cover glass may have any of a number of configurations. In some configurations, the cover glass may define an aperture for the electromechanical microphone device at an edge of the glass-encapsulated microphone. In some configurations, the cover glass may define a cavity to accommodate the integrated circuit device that is separate from a cavity that accommodates the electromechanical microphone device.
Abstract:
A separate control system may be configured for a combined sensor device. Alternatively, at least part of the control system may be included in another device, such as a processor of a mobile device. Software for handwriting, touch and fingerprint detection may be included in the control system. Low, medium and high resolution may be obtained with a single combined sensor device by scanning a subset of the sensels, or by aggregating lines or columns. Power consumption may be reduced by aggregating sensor pixels (or rows or columns) electrically using the controller, so that they perform as a low power small array until higher resolution with a larger array is needed. Power consumption may be reduced by turning off portions or all of the sensor device, turning off parts of the control system, and/or employing first-level screening at a reduced frame rate.
Abstract:
This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for a combined sensor device. In some implementations, the combined sensor device may enable a single touchscreen to perform additional functions such as handwriting input and fingerprint recognition. In some implementations, these multiple features allow increased security through user authentication, and allow better capture of handwriting and a more interactive approach to user interfaces. A handheld mobile device such as a cell phone with the combined sensor device can enable an array of applications, such as using the mobile device as a gateway for user authentication to enable transactions and physical access; using the handwriting input function for signature recognition and transmittal for transaction applications; and/or using the handwriting input feature to automatically capture notes and other documents of students in an academic setting or employees in a corporate setting.
Abstract:
This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for making and using gyroscopes. Some gyroscopes include a drive frame, a central anchor and a plurality of drive beams disposed on opposing sides of the central anchor. The drive beams may connect the drive frame to the central anchor. The drive beams may include a piezoelectric layer and may be configured to cause the drive frame to oscillate torsionally in a plane of the drive beams. The gyroscope may also include a proof mass and a plurality of piezoelectric sense beams. At least some components may be formed from plated metal. The drive frame may be disposed within the proof mass. The drive beams may constrain the drive frame to rotate substantially in the plane of the drive beams. Such devices may be included in a mobile device, such as a mobile display device.
Abstract:
An interferometric display comprises a backlight with light extraction features (108) formed from a desiccant material within the display. A light source (112) is positioned at one or more edges or corners of the back glass (106), and the desiccant based features patterned in or on the back glass remove unwanted moisture and create uniform light extraction from the back glass.
