The medical instrument of the present invention is used for depositing a surfactant which is safe to a living body onto part or the whole of a blood contacting portion of the medical instrument having the blood contacting portion made of a hydrophobic material. The instrument of the present invention makes it possible to reliably conduct priming without causing fine bubbles to attach to the surface of the blood contacting portion when a liquid is caused to flow to said portion for the purpose of priming. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method of producing a medical instrument wherein a surfactant can be reliably and easily attached to a blood contacting portion made of a hydrophobic material, and which comprises the steps of assembling a medical instrument having a blood contacting portion made of a hydrophobic material, bringing a liquid containing a surfactant which is safe to a living body into contact with the blood contacting portion, drying them and attaching the surfactant to the surface of the blood contacting portion.

Creation of a spacially ordered system of hollow polymer fibres and fixation thereof in polymer edges (selvedges) made of a polymer are carried out in a combined device employing immediately successive steps in such a way that the hollow polymer fibres are wound off from separate creel reels and the entire hollow fibre system is parallelly fed in an ordered state directly into an open mould located in an injection module. After closing the mould, a reactive mixture is injected into the mould to form the polymer edges, which fix the position of the hollow polymer fibres. The production of the primary element of the heat-transfer surface area for a heat-exchanger or the primary element for the separation module is finished by separating a part of the edges in the direction crosswise to the direction of the hollow polymer fibres by cutting or by a combination of cutting and breaking.

The present disclosure relates to semipermeable membranes which are suitable for blood purification, e.g. by hemodialysis, which have an increased ability to remove larger molecules while at the same time effectively retaining albumin. The membranes are characterized by a molecular retention onset (MWRO) of between 9.0 kD and 14.5 kD and a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of between 55 kD and 130 kD as determined by dextran sieving curves and can be prepared by industrially feasible processes excluding a treatment with salt before drying. The invention therefore also relates to a process for the production of the membranes and to their use in medical applications.
