The present invention relates to herbal composition and methods of administering an herbal composition, comprising geranium oil and extracts from roots of the plants of the genus Sophora, particularly S. flavescenes and S. tonkinensis, to humans and other mammalian animals with gastric ulcers induced by H. pylori infection. The same composition is shown to be able to eradicate H. pylori in vitro. The invention also relates to a composition comprising citronellol and extracts from roots of Sophora plants. The present invention further relates to the use of citronellol to inhibit gastric ulcers. The invention also relates to the use of the same composition to inhibit the enzymatic activity of Na + /K + -ATPase to strengthen heart muscle contractions and prevent heart failure.

The composition is used to inhibit the growth of, and diseases and epidemiological significant effects caused by, Clostridium perfinigens , E, coli and Salmonella , in the gut of livestock. More particularly, the antimicrobial composition and method relate to a feed additive that can be administered to poultry and /or swine through their feed. The use of such a feed additive may also inhibit other enteric pathogens that may be present in the gut of livestock.

A method of using hop acids for increasing food and energy uptake from feed by livestock is described which includes delivering the hop acids for oral ingestion to the animals by mixing the acids with livestock feed. The acids are mixed with the feed in an amount to inhibit certain types of undesirable bacteria in the livestock's digestive system, thereby increasing the production of propionate and lactate and decreasing the production of methane gas.

The present invention relates to supplementing the diets to sows during the periods of gestation, lactation, and breeding by feeding L-carnitine and chromium. The supplementation enhances pork productivity by increasing the number of pigs born alive in the subsequent reproductive cycle. Sow diets of this invention include L-carnitine and L-carnitine salts and trivalent chromium salts, such as chromium picolinate and chromium nicotinate. L-carnitine is generally added to the swine feed formulation in the amount of from about 20 to about 1500 ppm, and the trivalent chromium salt is generally added to the swine feed formulation in the amount of from about 20 ppb to about 1000 ppb. The invention also relates to supplemented sow diets and feed supplement formulation.
