Nanowires useful as heterogeneous catalysts are provided. The nanowire catalysts are useful in a variety of catalytic reactions, for example, the oxidative coupling of methane to ethylene. Related methods for use and manufacture of the same are also disclosed. More specifically, a catalyst comprising an inorganic catalytic polycrystalline nanowire, the nanowire having a ratio of effective length to actual length of less than one and an aspect ratio of greater than ten as measured by TEM in bright field mode at 5 keV, wherein the nanowire comprises one or more elements from any of Groups 1 trough 7, lanthanides, actinides or combinations thereof. The preparation of these polycrystalline nanowires involves the use of biological template such as a bacteriophage from the M13 family comprising protein pVIII. Also, an inorganic nanowire comprising one or more metal elements from any of Groups 1 through 7, lanthanides, actinides or combinations thereof and a dopant comprising a metal element, a semi -metal element, a non-metal element or combinations thereof is disclosed and nanowires having core/shell structure are disclosed. Preparation of nanowires in the absence of biological templates is also provided.

Described here are systems and methods for treating fuel injected exhaust streams. In general, the systems comprise a fuel injector, a pre-combustor, and a fuel combustor. The methods described herein include methods for regenerating a NO x trap or a DPF, and methods for generating a substantially uniform fuel air mixture at a fuel combustor inlet, or a substantially uniform temperature at a fuel combustor outlet. The methods of regenerating a NO x trap typically comprise the steps of injecting fuel into an exhaust stream, passing the stream through a pre-combustor, operating the pre-combustor to at least partially combust the injected fuel, reacting the fuel and exhaust stream mixture within a fuel combustor to generate a reducing gas mixture, and introducing the reducing gas mixture into a NO x trap, whereby the NO x trap is regenerated. Similar methods for regenerating a diesel particulate filter are also described. Control strategies are also provided.

An exhaust aftertreatment system is provided with a large channel combustor (107), a fuel reformer (108), and a lean NOx trap (109). The lean NOx trap (109) is denitrated by steps comprising: heating the fuel reformer (108) to steam reforming temperatures by introducing vaporized fuel to the large channel combustor (107) and combusting a portion of the vaporized fuel under lean conditions, then making the exhaust-injected fuel mixture overall rich, whereby the fuel reformer (108) produces syn gas that denitrates the lean NOx trap (109). The fuel reformer (108) has a low thermal mass, whereby it is designed to heat to at least about 500 2C and catalyze steam reforming reaction with each denitration. The large channel combustor (107) is a monolith having an average channel size larger than the fuel reformer (108) and a thermal mass no more than about 20% that of the fuel reformer (108), whereby the large channel combustor (107) facilitates low temperature startup of the fuel reformer (108).
