Disclosed herein are polyol particles treated to modify the properties of the polyol. Polyol particles are coated with a crunch material coating composition to provide a particulate crunch material. Alternatively, hygroscopic polyol particles are coated with an inorganic material to provide a polyol having a reduced capacity for moisture absorption. Also disclosed herein is the incorporation of such pretreated polyol particle compositions in chewing gum.

A protein comprising an amino acid sequence represented by SEQ ID NO: 1 in the Sequence Listing and originating in human MP52 and the dimer of this protein. This dimer protein can be obtained by constructing a plasmid containing a DNA wherein a codon encoding methionine is added to the 5' end of a DNA sequence encoding the above-mentioned aminoacid sequence, transforming Escherichia coli by this plasmid, incubating the E. coli transformant, solubilizing and purifying the obtained inclusion body to thereby give a monomer protein, and then renaturing the obtained monomer protein into the dimer followed by purification. This dimer protein is useful in the treatment of cartilage and bone diseases.

A coffee extracting apparatus comprises an extractor (20) for a coffee liquid, a receiver-decanter (30) capable of holding water for extraction, receiving the coffee liquid into a cup or the like, a circulation passage (50) and a circulating pump (60) for conveying a liquid in the receiver-decanter (30) and pouring the same into the extractor (20), a circulating water heater (70), and a control unit (90). The control unit (90) drives the circulating pump (60) for a predetermined period of time (T1) for circulating of the liquid when a water supply and extraction switch (11) is on, and turns on the circulation water heater (70) for a limited period of time (T0) in the beginning of operation whereby heated water of high temperature is poured for the limited period of time (T0) in the beginning of operation and thereafter non-heated water is poured.
