Disclosed are foam compositions and processes to form mixed tannin-phenolic foams. The foams comprises a continuous polymeric phase defining a plurality of cells, wherein the continuous polymeric phase comprises a mixed-resin derived from a phenol, a tannin, and a first monomer, and wherein the plurality of cells comprises a plurality of open-cells and a plurality of closed-cells with an open-cell content measured according to ASTM D6226-5, of less than 50%. The foam composition also comprises a discontinuous phase disposed in at least a portion of the plurality of closed-cells, the discontinuous phase comprising one or more blowing agents.

Additional embodiments of the invention include multilayer thermal imaging donors comprising in layered sequence: a base film, a carrier layer and a nanoparticle layer. The carrier layer can be a dielectric or conducting layer. When the carrier layer is a dielectric layer, the base film includes a light attenuating agent in the form of a dye or pigment.

Methods for purifying an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution waste stream having an impurity fraction comprising an initial Ti fraction, an initial S fraction and an initial Si fraction; that provide purified aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions having a final Ti fraction of less than 250 ppm, a final S fraction of less than 200 ppm, and a final Si fraction of less than 10 ppm, which may be determined with inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy. Process steps in various embodiments include sparging with an gas; mixing the sparged solution with a precipitation agent comprising a sufficient amount of an alkali earth metal salt and, optionally, a phosphoric acid source, to provide a metal salt precipitate; and mixing the initial aqueous acid solution or, optionally, the sparged aqueous acid solution, with a flocculating polymer. A preferred alkali earth metal salt is barium chloride and preferred flocculating polymers are poly(diallyldialkylammonium chloride) homopolymers and copolymers.

A process for manufacture of hydrofluoroalkanesulfonic acid with at least one hydrogen bonded to the carbon atom adjacent to the carbon atom bonded to the sulfonic acid group comprising: contacting a fluoroolefin with sulfite in an aqueous solution adjusted to about pH 4 to pH 12; removing water from the solution to form a solid; directly treating the solid with oleum; and distilling the hydrofluoroalkanesulfonic acid therefrom. Also a process for manufacture of potassium hydrofluoroalkanesulfonate in high purity is described.

This invention concerns modified fluorosulfonic acid compounds possessing a sulfonic acid fluoride, chloride or ester group or a sulfonic acid or a salt of a sulfonic acid group at one end and respectively a hydrolyzable or hydrolyzed silane group at the other end, said sulfonic group being adjacent a substantially fluorinated bidentate hydrocarbylene group which is in turn adjacent to a hydrocarbylene group linked to said hydrolyzable or hydrolyzed silane group. Self-condensation of the latter compounds provides novel siloxanes and polysiloxanes. This invention further concerns novel composites comprising a metal oxide network having incorporated therein a group having the formula: -O)qSi(OH)n-qR mR RfSO3Q, and compositions comprising a solid material having a reactive surface to which surface is attached at least one group having the formula: -O)qSi(OH)n-qR mR RfSO3Q.

A ceramic matrix composite article comprised of inorganic fibers having a mullite-containing coating disposed within a matrix phase. The invention also provides a method for making such an article, as well as for preparing a fiber having a mullite-containing coating. The mullite-containing coating on inorganic fibers within a matrix acts as a debonding coating, and the ceramic matrix composite article exhibits high strength and fracture toughness, even at elevated temperatures.

Disclosed are foam compositions and processes to form closed-cell tannin-based foams. The process comprises forming an agglomerate-free solution comprising a tannin, a first monomer, a second monomer, and water, wherein the first monomer comprises formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, furfural, glyoxal, acetaldehyde, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, acroleim, levulinate esters, sugars, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, 2,5-furandicarboxylic aldehyde, urea, difurfural (DFF), or mixtures thereof, and the second monomer comprises furfuryl alcohol, glycerol, sorbitol, lignin, or mixtures thereof. The process also comprises mixing one or more blowing agents with the agglomerate-free solution to form a pre-foam mixture and mixing an acid catalyst with the pre-foam mixture to form a foam composition. The process comprises adding a surfactant to at least one of the agglomerate-free solution, pre-foam mixture, or the foam composition. The process further comprises processing the foam composition to form a tannin-based foam.
