    摘要: The present invention relates generally to advantageous devices and methods for treating patients suffering from renal insufficiency and/or hepatic insufficiency. More particularly, the invention relates in certain aspects to devices and methods for performing continuous flow-through peritoneal dialysis (CFPD). In other aspects of the invention, peritoneal dialysis systems are provided which utilizes a bioreactor to regenerate peritoneal fluid for re-infusion into a peritoneal cavity. The invention, therefore, provides advantageous systems for passing fluid through a patient's peritoneal cavity at a relatively high flow rate, while maintaining in the peritoneal cavity an optimal dialysate pressure, to thereby alter the contents of the patient's blood by diffusion of molecules through the peritoneal membrane.

    摘要: The invention relates to methods and compositions for delivering iron to an iron-deficient patient, more particularly, to methods whereby an iron complex comprising divalent or trivalent ionic iron complexed with one or more low molecular weight anions is administered to a patient by transfer from dialysate. A complex selected according to the invention is non-polymeric; soluble in an aqueous medium; chemically stable, thereby preventing the dissociation of iron ions from the anions under conditions according to the invention; and can be well absorbed into blood and the living body. Also provided are dialysate compositions including therein an iron complex selected according to the invention, and dialysate concentrates which may be diluted to yield an inventive dialysate composition.

    摘要: Devices and methods for providing extracorporeal treatment of blood for effective plasmafiltration or hemofiltration are disclosed. The device incorporates a hollow fiber membrane device (HFD) connected in series with a parallel plate dialyzer (PPD). Sorbent suspension from a sorbent bag (101) first passes through the sorbent inlet (102) of the PPD, exits through sorbent outlet (103), is drawn into accumulator reservoir (104), is expelled from accumulator reservoir (104) and passes through check valve (105) in response to alternating positive pressure and negative pressure applied to the accumulator reservoir (104). The sorbent suspension then passes into HFD inlet (106) and through the outer chamber of the HFD, thus agitating and mixing the sorbent suspension into contact with exterior surfaces of the hollow fibers (107) in the HFD. Sorbent suspension exits the HFD from outlet (108) and passes through blood leak detector (109) and back into the sorbent bag (101).
