Abstract: A microfluidic flow control device (32) includes a moveable flap (30) capable of intermittently engaging a sealing surface(21A). One-way or check valve utility may be provided. Multiple valves may be coupled to various fluid displacement means to provide pumping utility. Devices may be constructed with stencil layers from various materials, including polymeric materials, adhesive tapes, and/or filter materials. Flow control devices may be passively activated by fluidic contents or by external actuation means.

Abstract: The invention provides microfluidic devices with embedded fluidic impedances. Such impedancesdo not allow fluid to pass at a low differential pressure, but allow fluid to flow at a higher differential pressure. Impedances are formed by the three dimensional overlap of two or more channels contained within layers of the device. Such devices can be rapidly protyped and can be assembled to contain multiple fluidic impedances to perform complex fluid handling tasks, including metering defined volumes of samples and dividing samples into aliquots.

Devices and methods for trunk-branch metering of fluid plugs in which one or more branch channels of defined volume are metered from a bulk fluid are described. Also described are the metering of at least one discrete plug by selecting the supply conditions of a first and a second fluid to a microfluidic channel. The first fluid may be a liquid and the second fluid a gas. Reduced-area channel segments are provided to assist with metering one or more discrete fluid plugs. In another aspect, a microfluidic volume is metered by filling a microfluidic chamber with fluid, sealing an inlet channel, and then extracting the fluid.

Abstract: Microfluidic devices having porous materials that impede or restrict the passage of fluid for a given pressure are provided. Such devices may serve as valves, and multiple valves having different impedance characteristics may be constructed in a single device to control the overall direction of fluid flow. Impedance regions may be constructed in various ways, such as, for example: by inserting porous materials into or between channels; by sandwiching a sheet or layer of porous material (181, 182) between other layers of the device (180, 183) (preferably in stencil form); or by adding a liquid, solution, slurry, or suspension into microfluidic channels, and then permitting the formation of porous deposits. Various types of adhesive tape may be used for one or more layers of the device.
