Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing (S)-N-ethyl-N-methyl-3-[1-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-phenyl carbamate (i.e. (S)-rivastigmine) ( I ) and tartrate ( II ) thereof, which includes the following steps: reacting 3-(1-(S)-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl)-phenol ( III ) or its salt with phosgene, diphosgene or triphosgene and obtaining compound ( IV ), followed by reacting with N-methyl-N-ethyl amine and obtaining the compound ( I ). The tartrate ( II ) can be obtained by reacting compound ( I ) with L-(+)-tartaric acid ( V ) . In said process, 3-(1-(S)-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl)-phenol is prepared from (S)-1-phenethylamine.
