Abstract: An electronic device having a heat source disposed in direct alignment with a battery for the device and a thermal management system in thermal contact with the heat source. The thermal management system may extend from at least a first surface of the battery to a second surface of the battery. The second surface of the battery may be adjacent a heat dissipation element. The thermal management system may further be in thermal contact with the heat dissipation element. Further a portion of the thermal management system extends along the first and second surfaces of the battery and has a sufficiently high anisotropic ratio to avoid the transfer of heat to the battery to the extent to inhibit the functioning of the battery.

Abstract: Sheets of flexible graphite may be used as thermal interfaces in various ways. The flexible graphite sheets may consist of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite, graphitized polyimide sheets, or combinations thereof. The sheets in their unaltered form are standard planar sheets. The sheets are manipulated to create a three dimensional graphite article. The article is used to dissipate heat away from a heat source to a heat dissipation element. The article can take anyone of the shapes included herein or other three dimensional shapes other than a standard sheet of paper. Such a graphite article may be incorporated into a thermal management system.

Abstract: An electronic device has a heat source and a generally rectangular shape battery proximate the heat source. The battery may have first and second major surfaces. A thermal regulator is in thermal contact with both of the heat source and substantially all of at least the first major surface of the battery. During operation of the device, heat transferred from the heat source to the first major surface via the thermal regulator balances the temperature profile exhibited along the first major surface such that it is substantially uniform.

Abstract: A graphite article which can be compressed by more three (3%) percent at a contact pressure of 100 KPa or less without damaging the graphite article reducing the thermal impedance exhibited by the article. Also a graphite article comprising graphitized polymer having a thickness of at least 75 microns. Preferably the graphite has a density of less than 1.50 g/cc and a compressibility of more than 3% at a contact pressure of 100 KPa. Also the article has a generally sheet like shape. These articles may be used in a thermal management system to dissipate heat from a heat source.
