The invention is directed to apparatus and methods for contacting gas and solids in the manufacture of edibles, and particularly in connection with coating edible particulate solids. A drum (10) is positioned around an inner tube (20) so that an annular space (30) is defined between the drum (10) and the tube (20). A rotatable spiral element (110) defines a gas pathway in the annular space (30), such that rotation of the spiral (110) pushes particulate solids through the drum (10) while the solids are contacted with gas in the annular space (30).

A method and a machine (1) for continuous coating of cores of products, in particular confectionery products, in which a hollow drum (3) rotating about an axis of its own (4) carries, stably connected inside it, a body (20) wound axially in a helix or a spiral, with which it delimits a plurality of treatment chambers (22), each adapted to house a mass of cores to be treated; in at least part of the chambers (22), the mass of cores is sprayed with a coating material during rotation of the drum (3) in a first direction of rotation about its axis (4), and impinged upon by a flow of process air during rotation of the drum (3) in a second direction of rotation opposite to the first direction of rotation, before feeding the coated cores into an adjacent chamber (22) causing the drum (3) to perform a complete rotation in one of the two directions of rotation.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for dry coating solid dosage forms. The method includes the steps of placing solid dosage forms in a rotatable, electrically grounded housing, and spraying a film forming polymer powder composition into the housing during rotation thereof to form a polymer coating on the solid dosage forms, the polymer powder composition being sprayed using an electrostatic spray gun, and curing the coated solid dosage forms.

A method of making coated chewing gum products comprises the steps of providing chewing gum cores; providing a first coating syrup comprising a bulk sweetener; providing an aldehyde flavor; providing a second coating syrup separate from the first coating syrup and comprising a dipeptide sweetener; and applying the first and second coating syrups to the cores and drying the syrups to produce a coating on the cores. Calcium carbonate or another antacid may be incorporated in the coating by being mixed into the first coating syrup or applied as a dry charge.

An improved process of coating tacky or soft polymer pellets to maintain a free-flowing property, uses a liquid binder, in conjunction with an anti-tack or partitioning powder such as talc to prevent aggregation during storage. The binder is a non-volatile material such as an oil or plasticizer including triglycerides, mono-/di-glycerides, acetylated mono-/di-glycerides, fatty acids, epoxidized triglycerides, phthalates, benzoates, sebacates, lactates, citrates, mineral oils etc. Applications of this process include chewing gum bases, hot-melt adhesives, sealants, rubber masterbatches, powdered rubber, and other soft and tacky polymer materials.
