The precleaning system (10) includes a precleaner header that includes a housing with a needle (28) receiving channel and a connected waste discharge channel (18), a needle (28) with a plurality of fluid discharge perforations is received within the needle (28) assembly receiving channel, and a coupling arm (20) for attaching the precleaner header to a dialyzer header cap. Waste fluid from the dialyzer header is discharged back into the needle assembly receiving channel along the outside of the needle into a fluidly connected waste discharge channel (18) and out a waste discharge outlet. The invention also includes a method of precleaning a used dialyzer. The invention may also include a base unit that automates the transfer of fluids and waste.

A plurality of liquid conduits (11, 12, 13) that are made from a material that is permeable to ultraviolet radiation are grouped together with external connections for the supply and removal of liquids around the burner(s) (20, 21), whereby the liquid flowing therethrough is immediatedly disinfected and made free of endotoxin and pyrogen. The conduits (11, 12, 13) are crossflown by osmotic water, permeate, treated dialysate, used dialysate prior to disposal (waste water), and optionally bypass dialysate in the online haemodialysis method.

An improved chemical treatment system (10) for hemodialysis machines, which includes a first three way valve (26) which has a normally open position in the dialysis and rinsing modes of the hemodialysis machine. The valve in the normally open position couples a source of water (12) through the valve to the bicarbonate pump (66) for rinsing purposes before and after dialysis and the chemical treatment modes of the hemodialysis machine. In the chemical treatment mode of the hemodialysis machine the valve is switched to couple a source (90) of treatment chemical through the valve to the bicarbonate pump. The chemical treatment system includes a second valve (78), which if in the normally open position, then only the bicarbonate portion and associated downstream portions will be chemically treated. In the closed position, the chemical will be switched to also flow through the whole hemodialysis machine from the water inlet to provide for a half or total system chemical treatment cycle. A vent valve (98) coupled to the first valve can be included to further ensure that chemicals are not inadvertently entered into the hemodialysis machine.
