A system and method are provided for generating a puzzle from media content. The method includes receiving input indicative of a selection of a media content (1002) to be converted into puzzle content, receiving input indicative of at least one edit (1004) to be applied to the puzzle content, receiving input indicative of at least one puzzle property (1006) to be applied to the puzzle content, generating (1014) the puzzle content based on the at least one edit and the at least one puzzle property, and sending (1014) the puzzle content to a recipient. The system includes a computing device (1200) having a processor (1202) and a memory (1204) configured to implement the method.

The puzzle pieces exhibit game-play characteristics of physical jigsaw puzzle pieces, such as friction, inertia, and angular momentum. The digital jigsaw puzzle may be implemented on a variety of multiple electronic formats including, but not limited to, websites, mobile devices, home computers, handheld gaming devices, and game consoles. Digital jigsaw puzzles can be used as an advertising format where the image of the puzzle is an advertisement.

A puzzle toy according to the present invention comprises: a set of pieces containing a plurality of component pieces; and a main body which accommodates the set of pieces therein. Each component piece has a back surface on which a plurality of lattices is formed. The main body comprises: light-emitting elements arranged to correspond to the respective lattice and emit light toward the lattices, and light-receiving elements for sensing the light reflected by the lattices; a signal analyzing unit which determines colors of the lattices by the signals sensed by the light-receiving elements, and outputs signals for the lattices; a feedback call unit which analyzes output signals for each lattice, received from the signal analyzing unit, recognizes the lattice arrangement of the set of pieces, and determines whether the assembly for the set of pieces is completed and the type of the set of pieces upon completion of the assembly of the set of pieces; and a feedback processing unit which outputs information on the set of pieces, completed by the signal received from the feedback call unit.
