A self-healing composite membrane includes a continuous ionomer phase in which is dispersed a plurality of hollow fibers and/or microcapsules each containing a liquid healing agent that includes a dispersion or solution of a healing ionomer in a liquid vehicle. Electrochemical devices employing the self-healing composite membranes are provided.

A method for forming a lattice with precisely sized holes includes disposing cutter molecules with species attached about the periphery of each molecule on to the lattice. The method continues with the species cutting molecular bonds of the lattice so as to form precisely sized holes in the lattice. The edges of the holes may then be functionalized.

A method of making a gas separation membrane by providing a plating vessel with a volume of plating solution of gas-selective metal ions into which is placed a porous support. The plating solution is circulated over a surface of the porous support while maintaining conditions within the plating vessel so as to promote the electroless deposition. The circulation rate of the plating solution is such as to enhance the metal deposition onto the surface of the porous support in the formation of the gas separation membrane.

Technologies described herein are generally related to systems and processes for repairing a graphene membrane on a support. A chamber may receive a layer of graphene on a support. The layer of graphene may include a hole. A first container including an initiator may be effective to apply an initiator through the hole to the support to functionalize the support and produce an initiator layer on the support. A second container including an activator may be effective to apply an activator through the hole to the initiator layer to activate the initiator layer. The application of the activator may further be effective to grow a polymer from the initiator layer. The growth of the polymer may be effective to produce a polymer plug in the hole and effective to repair at least a portion of the layer of graphene.

Technologies described herein are generally related to repairing graphene on a porous support. In some examples, a method is described that may include receiving a graphene layer on a support. The graphene layer may include a hole and a pore. The method may further include applying a first reactive material to a first side of the graphene layer. The first reactive material may include molecules larger than the pore. A second reactive material may be applied through the support to a second side of the graphene layer. The second reactive material may include molecules larger than the pore. The first and second reactive materials may react in the hole to produce a plug in the hole and to repair the graphene layer.

Methods for preparing a polymer membrane on a porous support may include providing a porous support having an outer wall, a first end, a second end, and porous channel surfaces that define a plurality of channels through the porous support from the first end to the second end. The plurality of channels includes membrane channels. The channel surfaces that define the membrane channels are membrane-channel surfaces. The polymer membrane may be coated onto the porous support by first establishing a pressure differential between the outer wall and the plurality of channels. Then, a pre-polymer solution may be applied to the membrane-channel surfaces and, optionally, the first and second ends, by slip coating or emulsion coating while the pressure differential is maintained. This results in formation of a pre-polymer layer on at least the membrane-channel surfaces. Then, the pre-polymer layer may be cured to form the polymer membrane.

There is disclosed a method of manufacturing a thin and uniform ceramic filter formed with less membrane formation times and having less defects. A ceramic sol whose average pore diameter after the sol itself has been formed into a membrane is larger than that of a ceramic separation membrane and is 10 nm or less is brought into contact with the surface of a ceramic separation membrane having an average pore diameter of 0.5 to 10 nm, and the ceramic separation membrane having the ceramic sol is dried and then fired to repair a defect portion of the ceramic separation membrane.
