A Zn-Si or Fe-Si zeolite having an MWW framework may be formed by treating a gel solution with a hydrothermal treatment. The gel solution includes water, a silicon source, a zinc or iron source, and an MWW-templating agent. The hydrothermal treatment may include dissolving the source materials in the gel solution, and heating the gel solution with the dissolved sources to induce hydrothermal crystallization in the gel solution. The zeolite can be substantially free of aluminum, and can be used in a catalyst, or in a separation or purification device.

A process for producing catalyst for biomass catalytic cracking is disclosed herein. The process includes modifying a phyllosilicate to produce a modified phyllosilicate having an improved yield of a pyrolysis reaction. The modification of the phyllosilicate includes leaching the clay with an acid or basic solution to form a leached clay preparation, calcining the leached clay and contacting the treated clay with a suspension comprising metal ions for ion-exchange. The modified clay catalyst can then be mixed with inorganic materials such as zeolites and dried to form fluidizable microspheres.

The MSC is prepared under hydrothermal synthesis conditions. The invention also relates to a MSC being prepared from a mixture having a molar composition of aM 2 0:bR:mCe0 2 :nXo:yH 2 0:zAC, wherein M is an inorganic cation selected from sodium, potassium, lithium, cesium, rubidium, or a mixture thereof, R is an organic moiety, X is one of Ni, Cu or Zn, AC is an acid source, a is from 0-10, b is from 0.01-0.2, m is between 0.001 and 0.5, n is between 0.001 and 0.5, y is from 1-300, z is from 0.1-3, and wherein the MSC has a silicate framework having micro- and/or meso-porous structure after hydrothermal treatment. The process comprises the step of heating a borosilicate zeolite precursor in a metal salt solution, e.g., an aluminum nitrate solution, zinc nitrate solution or manganese nitrate solution. The delaminated aluminosilicate zeolite product is then recovered from the solution.
