In an ion-exchange system with a mixed bed resin layer of both anion exchange resin (10) and cation exchange resin (9), a layer of cation exchange resin (11), which is regenerated in the counterflow, is arranged below the mixed bed. This acts in the downward flow as a polishing layer, and can be used in the upward flow for the preliminary purification of condensates. The resins can be regenerated either internally or externally. In one preferred embodiment, a lower specific weight anion exchange resin and a higher specific weight cation exchange resin are used and an air distribution system (8) is configured at the boundary layer between the mixed bed layer (9, 10) and the cation exchange resin layer (11) in order to mix the mixed bed resins. Such an arrangement largely obviates the need for additional operations or regenerating agents, especially when internal regeneration is adopted. The ion-exchange system thus facilitates a particularly economical fine purification of water, especially water with a low salt content, and treatment of aqueous condensates.
