A method of coating a substrate comprises the steps of: supplying a substrate, applying at least a base layer of a first curable substance having a viscosity of 1000-10000 cP at 25 °C on the substrate, applying at least a cover layer of a second curable substance having a viscosity of 100-2000 cP at 25 °C on the base layer, wherein the cover layer is thicker than the base layer, wherein both the first and second substances comprise polyurethane acrylate and reactive diluent.
Abstract:
A process for the production of an OEM base coat/clear top coat multi-layer coating wherein a waterborne base coat composition is spray-applied by electrostatically-assisted high speed rotary atomization, wherein the waterborne base coat composition comprises binder solids comprising 20 to 100 wt.% of an aqueously dispersed polyurethane urea resin with a carboxyl number of 10 to 50 mg KOH/g, which is made by a process comprising the steps: (i) producing a non-gelled polyurethane prepolymer with a free isocyanate group content of 0.5 to 4.5 wt.% by reacting polyol, a compound having one alcoholic hydroxyl group and a molar mass of 32 to 300, a polyhydroxycarboxylic acid and a polyisocyanate, in the presence of ketone and/or other inert organic solvent, (ii) if not already effected, neutralizing the carboxyl groups of the polyhydroxycarboxylic acid with a tertiary amine, (iii) converting the ketone and/or other inert organic solvent solution into an aqueous dispersion by mixing with water, and (iv) chain extending the polyurethane prepolymer by reacting the free isocyanate groups thereof with a compound having at least two amino groups capable of addition to isocyanate groups to form urea groups, wherein the at least one compound having one alcoholic hydroxyl group and a molar mass of 32 to 300 is used in a proportion of 0.02 to 0.15 equivalents relative to the NCO provided by the polyisocyanate employed in step (i).
Abstract:
Described herein are methods of coating both metallic and polymeric surfaces adding hydophilicity comprising the steps mixing a coating composition comprising at least one polyol, at least one compound having at least two isocyanate groups, and an organic solvent; introducing nudeophilic functional groups on the surface thereby creating an active surface; subjecting the active surface to the coating composition thereby forming a coated surface; and curing the coated surface. Medical devices, for example, implantable medical devices can be coated by the methods described herein.
