Abstract:
Compositions and methods for coupling metals to aluminum surfaces are provided. The compositions are prepared as aqueous solutions or suspensions, and can be applied to the aluminum surface using conventional printing techniques. Rheology of the printable composition can be adjusted to provide a gel or a cream. Curing steps, if necessary, are performed at low temperatures that are compatible with plastic/polymer components of mass produced devices, such as aluminum RFID antennae.

Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for producing a connecting assembly (6) comprising at least two profiles having one or multiple hollow chambers ( 1 to 5) designed to simplify the production of said connecting assembly. To do this, the hollow chamber profiles (1 to 5) are tightened with almost gas-proof seals (30) on the ends or in the area between the ends and the contact points. In the area between the connecting assembly (6) and the seals (30), at least one fill hole (20) is provided, through which a coolant, specially a protective gas, preferably nitrogen, can be fed.
Abstract:
The output of a continuously pumped, Q-switched, Nd:YAG laser (10) is frequency converted to provide ultraviolet light (62) for forming vias (72, 74) in multi-layered targets (40). The parameters of the output pulses (62) are selected to facilitate substantially clean, simultaneous or sequential drilling or via formation in a wide variety of materials such as metals, organic dielectrics, and reinforcement materials having different thermal absorption characteristics in response to ultraviolet light. These parameters typically include at least two of the following criteria: high average power of greater than about 100 milliwatts measured over the beam spot area, a temporal pulse width shorter than about 100 nanoseconds, a spot diameter of less than about 50 microns, and a repetition rate of greater than about one kilohertz. The laser system (10) and method circumvent conventional depth of cut saturation limitations and can achieve an increased depth of cut per pulse in a target (40) formed of either single- or multi-layered material.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a replication master tooling article suitable for manufacturing replicated articles by machining a substrate surface with laser energy to produce a plurality of geometric structures in the substrate, the geometric structures having side surfaces extending from the surface of the substrate into the substrate.
Abstract:
A method of highly precisely and efficiently producing spot cladding members used for lead frames of semiconductor integrated circuits such as flat packages. A metal foil and a substrate member that are fed in constant steps are temporarily spot-welded successively at predetermined regular intervals by resistance welding, ultrasonic welding or laser welding, and then undesired portions are removed by laser cutting or rotary cutter. Alternatively, the metal foil fed in constant steps is cut by punching and is temporarily spot-welded onto the substrate member fed in the same manner using the punch as the welding electrode. Such a step provides a material to which pieces of metal foil of a required size are temporarily fastened maintaining a highly precise pitch. Thereafter, the constant-load control and the constant-elongation control are carried out in cascade in the steps of pressing and rolling such that the material has a predetermined thickness. Furthermore, a desired position is detected from the pitch after rolling or from a predetermined reference point to obtain the above desired load. Thus, the thickness of the material is highly precisely controlled to obtain a spot cladding member having a highly precise pitch and size.
Abstract:
Methods and systems provide for the manufacture of a cylindrical battery cell case that is changed from steel (or nickel-plated steel) to aluminum. With this change, spot welding the copper tab from the anode to the aluminum case will result in the copper and aluminum corroding over time - leading to early battery failure. To manufacture the battery with the aluminum case, one or more manufacturing changes are made including one or more of: 1. changing the polarity of the battery to spot weld the copper tab to a steel top of the battery; 2. coating the copper tab with a second material to prevent corrosion; and/or, 3. use a different welding method (e.g., a friction stir weld) to fuse the copper tab to the aluminum case.
Abstract:
Laser keyhole welding with a prefiUed narrow gap is disclosed. Alloying filler material may be applied to an edge of a workpiece before aligning two workpiece edges. The aligned workpiece edges form a prefiUed narrow gap. A laser system and a beam delivery system form a laser tool point at the gap to generate a welding keyhole, the laser keyhole is translated along the narrow gap and through the filler material to form a laser weld joint.
