The present disclosure describes a spreader roll (101) that can help spread webs laterally in a web processing operation, in particular to reduce or remove the presence of wrinkles or bagginess in the web. The spreader roll can be a reverse crown roll that is covered with a resilient material (160) to assist spreading the web to remove wrinkles. The surface curvature of the spreader roll (101) can be formed using layers of material such as a tape, to easily and readily approximate the shape of a reverse crown roll.

A sheet retention device is provided for retaining at least one sheet. The sheet retention device comprises a sheet supporting means (56) for supporting at least a first portion of the sheet, a rotatable guiding means (50) configured to enclose a second portion of the sheet, an urging means (61) and a drive means for in operation controllably rotating the rotatable guiding means. The rotatable guiding means comprises a passageway (55) arranged through the rotatable guiding means, which passageway is configured to enclose the second portion of the sheet, the passageway having an entrance portion (55a) at one side of the rotatable guiding means and an exit portion (55b) at another side of the rotatable guiding means. The rotatable guiding means comprises an outer surface (51) and a sheet deflecting surface (53), such that in operation during at least part of a revolution of the rotatable guiding means a portion of the sheet is guided by the sheet deflecting surface into a sheet retaining position (60). The sheet retaining position is defined by the outer surface of the rotatable guiding means and the urging means. The urging means are urged against a portion of the outer surface of the rotatable guiding means.

An interleaving unit, comprising a pair of rolls (1, 2) set alongside one another and counter-rotating and provided with respective first and second folding tools (3, 4; 5, 6) set at a distance from one another along the circumferential development of the respective peripheral surfaces so as to operate in a common point of tangency (Z) on a succession of sheets (7a, 7b) fed between the two rolls, said tools (3, 4; 5, 6) being set on respective mobile cylinder sectors (8, 9, 10, 11) to enable positioning thereof at an adjustable distance apart along the circumferential development of a corresponding roll (1, 2), said interleaving unit comprising means (M1, M2, U) for independently adjusting the speed of rotation of one or more of said sectors according to their angular position in order to reduce or increase the peripheral speed of said sectors with respect to a speed of feed (Vm) of said sheets.

An apparatus (10) for varying the speed of printed products (12) is provided. The apparatus (10) includes a nip roll (14) rotatable about a nip roll axis (d) and an eccentric assembly (50) external of the nip roll (14) coupled to the nip roll (14) coincident with the nip roll axis (d). The eccentric assembly (50) is adapted to eccentrically move the nip roll (14). A method of varying the speed of a printed product in a printing press is also provided.

A device (1) for conveying sheet documents between upstream and downstream sheet document processors is disclosed. The device (1) is independent from the upstream and downstream sheet document processors and comprises a receiving section (4) adapted to receive, in use, sheet documents discharged by the upstream sheet document processor into an output pocket of the upstream sheet document processor, and a transport (7, 8) extending from the receiving section (4) to an output section (26). The transport (7, 8) is adapted to convey sheet documents received at the receiving section (4) to the output section (26). The sheet documents are then discharged from the output section (26), in use, to the downstream sheet document processor. A corresponding method is also disclosed.

The present disclosure involves systems and methods for performing automatic document alignment. One example system includes a document staging area including an alignment surface extending in a document feed direction; an alignment roller supported to rotate about an axis and intermittently contact a document in the document staging area while rotating to move the document to abut the alignment surface; and a feed roller support to rotate in the document feed direction to feed the document in the document feed direction after the alignment roller has rotated to move the document to abut the alignment surface.
