Provided herein are roadways containing polyurethane materials. A roadway includes a base layer of a compacted in situ material and/or a wear layer disposed on the base layer. One or both of these layers may include the polyurethane material to bind other components in the layers and to form more robust and durable roadway structures capable of withstanding operating loads of the roadway. In some embodiments, the polyurethane material is added to the wear layer by mixing in situ soil and/or foreign aggregate with polyurethane material or by dispensing the polyurethane material over the existing partially formed wear layer. The base layer may or may not include a polyurethane material. The type, concentration, distribution, and processing of the polyurethane material in the wear layer may be the same or different than that in the base layer.

An inorganic composite is formed from a solution of KH 2 PO 4 mixed with H 2 O, which is then mixed with a metal oxide and a filler material. The mixture of the solution with the metal oxide and filler material forms a flowable slurry. Fibers are then introduced into the slurry. The fibers chemically or mechanically bond with the slurry. The slurry is then cured to form a composite with fibers bonded with the inorganic cement matrix.

The present invention relates to compositions comprising the reaction product of amorphous silica or ultra-fine silica and one or more bases. The present invention also relates to materials and method involving the use of such products. In particular, the present invention i.a. relates to new mineral wool products, e.g. products comprising man-made vitreous fibres (such as glass fibres, slag fibres, stone fibres and rock fibres) or perlite, having included therein a binder component which comprises amorphous silica and aklali metal organosiliconates, e.g. potassium methyl siliconate. An important feature of such products is the preparation of the binder systems under vigorous mixing. Such products provide good fire, heat and sound insulating properties. The present invention also provides to a method for removing odorous substances from a gas where materials prepared from ultra-fine silica, water, and one or more components enabling porosity-conferring binding of the material, e.g. a base or bases. Furthermore, the invention provides methods for thixotroping bitumen.

An article 10 includes a carbon-containing composition that is protected from oxidation by covering the surface of the composition with an oxidation-resistant fiber 24. Optionally, a glaze 26 can be used for additional oxidation resistance. The fiber 24 reduces oxidation of carbon-containing articles and is particularly useful for carbon-containing compositions with an outer surface comprising carbon, such as carbon-fiber reinforced ceramic composites. The fiber 24 can be applied to the composition as a filament or fabric. Conveniently, the fiber 24 can be applied to the carbon-containing composition as a continuously wound fiber.

Novel concrete mixtures are accomplished, comprising pozzolanic cement in combination with mineral based reinforcements. Moreover, several applications of the novel concrete mixtures are disclosed.
