Methods of grafting an acrylate coating onto a substrate, and articles comprising a substrate with an acrylate coating are disclosed. The acrylate coatings can be formed by applying a first coating layer comprising at least one acrylate monomer and a Type II photoinitiator onto a first surface area of the substrate; and irradiating the first coating layer to form a first polymeric layer, wherein the polymer coating includes the first polymeric layer. The methods can be performed in open air, at room temperature, at ambient pressure, or without de- aerating the compounds, and the resulting acrylate coatings exhibit improved adhesive properties to the substrate.

A polyolefin material that is formed by solid state drawing of a thermoplastic composition containing a continuous phase that includes a polyolefin matrix polymer and nanoinclusion additive is provided. The nanoinclusion additive is dispersed within the continuous phase as discrete nano-scale phase domains. When drawn, the nano-scale phase domains are able to interact with the matrix in a unique manner to create a network of nanopores.

For example, a method of producing a resin composition comprising: mixing at least one vinyl functional thermoset resin with at least one thermoplastic resin wherein: the two resins are sufficiently miscible at a mixing viscosity of at least at least 5,000 cPs measured at the temperature of mixing and the mixing results in sufficient laminar flow such that a substantial portion of the resin mixture forms an IPN and/or a SIPN. The IPNs and/or SPINs formed have one or more superior properties over mixtures of the same resins.

Biocompatible polymeric coatings are provided which have excellent adhesion to a variety of substrate materials. The biocompatible coatings of the invention are comprised of a poly(alkylene oxide), a poly(carboxylic acid) or a poly(N-vinyl lactam) or mixtures thereof. The polymers adhere to the substrate through a polyisocyanate coating which bonds with the biocompatible coating when dried or irradiated or both. The biocompatible polymeric complexes have utility in medical devices such as catheters.
