The present invention provides in all aspects an intake manifold (10) for an internal combustion engine having a plenum (22) to be filled with combustible charge and inlet passage means (27) serving in use of the manifold (10) to connect the plenum (22, 23) with a cylinder (11 to 18) of the engine. In a first aspect of the invention the intake manifold has first and second plena (22, 23) and the inlet passage means (27) connect each plenum (22, 23) with a cylinder (11 to 18) of the engine such that combustion chamber means of the engine which fire consecutively are respectively supplied with combustible charge from a different plenum (22, 23). In a second aspect of the invention the manifold (10) has inlet passage means (27) comprising wall means (46) dividing at least a part of the inlet passage means (27) into a plurality of paths (44, 45) for fluid flow, and valve means (47) operable to open and close at least one of said paths (44, 45). In a third aspect, the invention provides an inlet manifold having a first and second plena (68, 69) each supplying a different plurality of cylinders of an engine and plena connecting means (60, 61, 62) operable to connect first (68) and second (69) plena to allow all of the cylinders (71 to 78) of the engine (90) to receive charge from both plena (68, 69) and to allow the resonant frequency of the intake manifold to be altered.

Es wird ein Saugmodul (3) für ein Kraftfahrzeug vorgeschlagen, mit einem ersten Volumen, in dem sich über eine Einströmöffnung (4) angesaugte Luft sammelt, einem zweiten Volumen in dem sich die Luft verteilt und das zu den Einlassventilen führende Ansaugkanäle (5) enthält, einem Gehäuse das die beiden Volumina umgrenzt und einer Drosselvorrichtung (8). Erfindungsgemäss umfasst die Drosselvorrichtung (8) ein Trägermodul (9) und ein zugehöriges Drosselelement, welches zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Volumen des Saugmoduls (3) angeordnet ist. Anwendung in Kraftfahrzeugen, insbesondere Personenkraftwagen.

An intake manifold (85) for an engine (E), which is provided with a cylinder head (8), a cylinder block (6) and a crank casing (7) and in which a crankshaft (15) is supported vertically, comprises in an integral manner a mount flange (84) connected to the cylinder head (8), a plurality of intake pipes (83a ...), a surge tank (82), and an elbow (81) connected to a throttle body (80) disposed forwardly of the crank casing (7). The surge tank (82) disposed on a side of the crank casing (7) can be connected through the elbow (81) to the throttle body (80) and an intake silencer (76) disposed in a space forwardly of the crank casing (7), so that the entire engine can be made compact.

Die Erfindung betrifft eine Brennkraftmaschine mit zumindest zwei Gruppen von zueinander vorzugsweise in einem Winkel > 0 angeordneten Zylindern, mit einem Einlasssystem (1) mit zumindest einem in einen Einlasssammler (2; 2a, 2b) mündenden Vorrohr (4; 4a, 4b), wobei jeder Zylinder über zumindest ein Einlassrohr (6, 8; 6a, 6b; 8a, 8b) mit einem für mehrere Zylinder gemeinsamen Einlasssammler (2; 2a, 2b) verbunden ist, wobei das Einlassrohr (6, 8; 6a, 6b; 8a, 8b) einen einlasssammlerseitigen Eintritt (7, 9; 7a, 7b; 9a, 9b) aufweist. A composite air intake manifold assembly (10) adapted for use with an internal combustion engine includes an upper half shell (14) formed from a polymer, a lower half shell (18) formed from a polymer and joined to the upper half shell (16) to define a housing having an internal cavity, and a one piece inner shell formed from a polymer and disposed within the cavity. The one piece inner shell in combination with the upper half shell and the lower half shell cooperate to define at least a pair of spaced apart air intake runners. Each of the runners includes an opened air intake end adapted to receive atmospheric air, and an opened air inlet end adapted to be connected to an associated air inlet side of a cylinder head of the internal combustion engine.

An internal combustion engine having a compressed air assisted fuel injection system (20). The injection system has a compressed air accumulator (34) with a first aperture (30) into the cylinder of the engine and a second aperture (38) into the crankcase (18) of the engine. The two apertures are located at opposite ends of the accumulator and the accumulator has a tube shape. The accumulator blows off pressure every time one of the ports into the cylinder is closed. The tube shape of the accumulator forms a tuned reflection pipe for a compression wave from the cylinder to generate a reflected compression wave for assisting in delivering fuel and air into the cylinder. The two apertures are adapted to be opened and closed by the piston head of the engine.
