The present invention generally relates to fluids for metalworking and other applications and, in particular, to compounds useful in such fluids. For instance, some aspects of the invention are generally directed to molecular compounds comprising polydentate acids (and derivatives thereof), polyalkylene glycols, and anhydrides (e.g., alkyl and/or alkenyl succinic anhydrides, and/or derivatives thereof), which may be reacted together, e.g., covalently, to form a compound useful for such fluids. An example of a polydentate acid is trimellitic acid; an example of a polyalkylene glycol is polyethylene glycol; an example of an anhydride is poly(isobutenylsuccinic anhydride). Such compounds can be used, for example, for emulsification and/or lubrication purposes, and/or as corrosion inhibiting agents. Such compounds can also be used in some cases to control foaming, and/or provide stability to hard water, for example, when included into a metalworking fluid formulation. Other embodiments are generally directed to fluids containing such compounds, which may be used for metalworking or other applications, methods for making or using such compounds, kits including such compounds, or the like.
