A method for fermenting carbohydrate-rich crops is provided. Sugar beet, sugar cane, sweet sorghum, tropical maize hybrids and fruits are rich in simple sugars; potato, sweet potato, cassava and yam are rich in starch; and Jerusalem artichoke is rich in inulin. This method uses vacuum infusion to infuse yeast into the intercellular space (apoplast) of the parenchyma tissue. The simple sugars diffuse into the apoplast, come into contact with the yeast and produce ethanol. Ethanol can be extracted from the crop by vacuum stripping or crushing or can be left inside the starchy crop to preserve it. In some variants, pectinase enzymes degrade the parenchyma cell walls to speed up diffusion of simple sugars to the yeast, speed up diffusion of amylase to starch granules or speed up diffusion of inulinase to insoluble inulin.

The present invention provides an improved method for the capturing and/or enriching of glycans from glycoproteins or biological materials carrying glycoproteins. In one embodiment, the method for capture and/or enrichment of glycans comprises the steps of: contacting the glycoprotein sample with an oxidizing agent such as periodate, binding the oxidized products to magnetic, paramagnetic or polymeric beads which could be hydrazide functionalized, separating the glycans from glycoproteins using chemical reaction involving acids or enzymatic reaction such as using PNGase to obtain glycans bound to beads, finally labeling bead bound glycans and cleaving the glycans from the beads. A further embodiment discloses a method for detecting and analyzing glycans using multiplexed capillary electrophoresis with laser induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) system comprising micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) in combination with capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) or capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE).

The invention consists in using cavitation in at least one operation during the process of beta-glucane isolation from wheat (raw material), preferably oats or barley. The wheat material, in particular grain, milled grain or its fractions, such as flour or bran are subject to defatting in conditions enabling occurrence of cavitation in a solution of water : organic solvent, in particular the ethyl alcohol, in proportions 1:1 to 1:5, preferably 1:3, in the temperature from 0° C to 60 °C, preferably 25 °C. Defatted raw material is subject to water extraction, with the application of cavitation, in a mass proportion from 5:1 to 20:1, preferably 10:1. PH of the extraction process ranges from 6,0 to 8,0, preferably 7,0, the temperature of the extraction process ranges from 1°C to 60°C, preferably 30°C, and the water extract is separated from the insoluble suspension by means of typical methods, such as filtration, centrifuging, sedimentation or flocculation. Denaturation of proteins occurs during the process of cavitation, in particular sonic cavitation, the duration of the process is 10-60 minutes, preferably 30 minutes; the de-proteinised filtrate containing water extract of beta-glucane is subject to precipitation of beta-glucane aided by the cavitation, in particular sonic cavitation, in the presence of an organic solvent, in particular ethyl alcohol, in the ratio: from 1:0,1 to 1:0,3, preferably 1:0,2, in the temperature from 0°C to 30°C, preferably from 25°C.

The present invention relates to a method for preparing a chitosan matrix having good mechanical properties comprising the steps of - a) preparing a solution of chitosan, - b) pouring the solution of a) into a mould in order to form a layer, - c) lyophilizing the layer of b) in order to obtain a matrix of chitosan, - d) sterilizing the matrix obtained in c) by water vapor treatment. The invention also relates to the matrices obtained and to surgical implants comprising such matrices. The invention further relates to a method for increasing the suture retention strength of a chitosan matrix obtained by lyophilization of a chitosan solution, and to a method for for decreasing the solubilization rate in hydrochloric acid of a chitosan matrix obtained by lyophilization of a chitosan solution, comprising the step of sterilizing said matrix by a water vapor treatment.

The polymer additive comprises hydrophilic functional groups, copolymerized hydrophilic monomers, or blocks of hydrophilic monomer repeat units. For example, the polymer additive can comprise a hydrophilic polymer or amphiphilic polymer. The porous asymmetric membrane can be a flat membrane or hollow fiber.

Provided is a polymer compound that is available from a plant as a raw material, can be easily extracted from the raw material, is highly safe, loads a small burden on the environment, and exhibits an excellent thickening effect, where the plant has been conventionally disposed as a waste. The polymer compound is extracted from Corchorus capsularis L. and/or Corchorus aestuans L. and has a shear viscosity of 0.2 Pa.s or more at a temperature of 25 ℃ and a shear rate of 10 (1/s) in an aqueous solution containing 1 percent by weight of the polymer compound.
