Abstract: Thin elastic films that can spontaneously attach to liquid interfaces, thereby offering a platform for tailoring their physical, chemical, and optical properties. Curved shells can be used to manipulate interfaces in qualitatively different ways. For example, an ultrathin shell with vanishing bending rigidity can impose its own rest shape on a liquid surface, in a process where the pressure across the interface inflates the shell into its original shape. The approach is amenable to optical applications as the shell is transparent, free of wrinkles, and may be manufactured over a range of curvatures.

Abstract: Provided are nucleic acids and vectors that collectively encode various gene products related to converting styrene to polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). In some embodiments, the nucleic acids and vectors collectively encode a styrene monooxygenase polypeptide, a flavin reductase polypeptide, a styrene-oxide isomerase polypeptide, and a phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase polypeptide, an acetyl-CoA C-acetyltransferase polypeptide, a 3-ketoacyl-ACP reductase polypeptide, a class I poly(R)-hydroxyalkanoic acid synthase polypeptide, and optionally an influx porin polypeptide. Also provided are systems and methods for producing PHB from styrene, methods and systems for remediating polystyrene waste. In some embodiments, the systems are in vivo systems.

Abstract: A method of fabricating plastic products having a preselected color, comprising preparing a dispersion of pigment of the preselected color in cottonseed oil; supplying a preselected plastic resin for the product to be fabricated to a process machine having a rotating screw; furnishing the dispersion to the process machine at a position adjacent to threaded portion of the rotating screw; and blending the dispersion and the resin by rotating the screw.
