    Abstract: A compact earth filtering machine adapted to engage with a base vehicle includes a frame including a guide structure for guiding earth being screened. A set of rollers is supported by the frame, with each roller associated with a corresponding sprocket. A mesh, forming a continuous loop and supported by the rollers, is provided for elevating and screening earth provided by the guide structure. A drive chain, coupled along an edge of the mesh, is adapted to engage the sprockets associated with the rollers. A driver is provided for rotating a selected one of the rollers and the associated sprocket to thereby cause the mesh to elevate and screen the earth provided by the guide structure. A transverse conveyor supported by the frame transports earth screened by the mesh to a discharge point adjacent to the compact filtering machine.

    Abstract: A trench-padding method (302, 304) and apparatus (1) provide a more efficient, cost efficient process of obtaining a maximal amount of padding material from material (16) excavated from a trench (21), and where selected, provide for trenching. The trench-padding apparatus includes a lead assembly (2) that includes a feeder housing (4) having a front rotating unit (5) with protrusions. The feeder housing (4) may be configured to excavate the trench or, alternatively, to scoop up previously excavated material. The front rotating unit (5) is attached to a frame of the trench-padding apparatus immediately in front of an elevator device (6), and the front rotating unit (5) forces clumps of the excavated material between the front rotating unit (5) and a base (7) of the feeder housing (4) to aid in reducing clump size. The method (302, 304) operates in the manner of the trench-padding apparatus.

    Abstract: Site-won spoil from an excavation which is a predominantly non-granular cohesive material can be converted into a material suitable for immediate use as a backfill material by a process of mechanically mixing the spoil with between 0 and 30 % by weight or volume of added granular material and between 1 and 10 % by weight or volume of a powder material comprising 1-5 % lime or with the additon of 1-5 % cement and/or 1-5 % pulverised fly ash. The process works well with clay soils and the range of suitable spoil can be extended by adding cement to the powder material. The proportions in the mixture are chosen in dependence on the clay and moisture content of the spoil. A machine which can be set to mix the ingredients and water in the correct proportions on site is also described.
