摘要: Starting from a mixture containing tocopherol, fats and/or fat derivatives, more particularly fatty acids, and optionally sterol and/or sterol derivatives, the free fatty acids present in the mixture are esterified with an alcohol and fatty glycerides are transesterified with an alcohol in the presence of a zinc oxide and/or zinc hydroxide catalyst. After the esterifications, the excess lower alcohol is distilled off from the reaction mixture. The transesterification catalyst and the glycerol present, if any, are removed and the fatty acid alkyl ester is distilled off from the mixture. Distillation of fatty acid alkyl esters can be accomplished with a packed column in sequence with a wiped film evaporator. The simultaneous recovery of tocopherol and sterol is possible. Tocopherols and sterols can be separated by the crystallization of sterols from a blend of organic solvents.

摘要: A composition and process for reducing the amount of smoke generated at elevated temperatures when applying a fiber finish composition to fibers. Figure 1 shows a smoke measurement device known as the 'Hund-Gerat' tester which is used to measure the amount of smoke generated. The addition of certain antioxidants to a fiber lubricant composition containing oxa-acids or oxa-acid esters substantially reduces the development of smoke at temperatures from 170 to 200 °C.

摘要: A chromium free conversion coating at least equivalent in corrosion protective quality to conventional chromate conversion coatings can be formed on aluminium and its alloys that contain at least 50 atomic percent aluminium by a dry-in-place aqueous acidic liquid comprising:
    (A) from 0.015 to 0.75 gram mole per kilogram of total composition of a component of anions, each of said anions consisting of (i) at least four fluorine atoms and (ii) at least one atom of an element selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, silicon, and boron and, optionally, (iii) one or more oxygen atoms; (B) a component of cations of elements selected from the group consisting of cobalt, magnesium, manganese, zinc, nickel, tin, zirconium, iron, aluminum and copper; the ratio of the total number of cations of this component to the total number of anions of component (A) being at least 3:5; and (C) sufficient free acid to give the composition, after dilution with from 1 to 19 times its own weight of water, a pH in the range from 0.5 to 5.0; and, optionally, (D) a composition that will form an organic resinous film upon drying in place.

摘要: Heating an aqueous mixture of a fluoroacid such as H2TiF6 and an oxide, hydroxide, and/or carbonate such as silica produces a clear mixture with long term stability against settling of any solid phase, even when the oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate phase before heating was a dispersed solid with sufficiently large particles to scatter light and make the mixture before heating cloudy. The clear mixture produced by heating can either be mixed with water soluble and/or water dispersible polymers, for example with dispersed polymers of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A or an acrylic acid polymer, or with soluble hexavalent and/or trivalent chromium, to produce a composition that improves the corrosion resistance of metals treated with the composition, especially after subsequent painting. Another composition that improves the corrosion resistance of metals after contact with them is an aqueous solution of a mixture of: (A') a water soluble or dispersible polymer having at least one -OH group per polymer molecule selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, modified starch, and mixtures thereof, and (B') polymers and copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid and their salts.

摘要: A highly corrosion-resistant, strongly paint-adherent conversion coating is formed on the surface of aluminiferous metal substrates by contacting such surfaces for 0.5 to 60 seconds with a sludging-free water-based surface treatment bath that has a pH of 1.5 to 4.0 and contains a zirconium compound, phosphoric acid compound, oxidizing agent, and a compound that is a source of hydrogen fluoride (in a quantity that produces a concentration of from 0.0001 to 0.2 g/L HF in the treatment bath). This contact is preferably followed by a water rinse and drying.
