An aluminum casting alloy consisting of, by weight, of 7.0-13.0% copper, .4-1.2% manganese, .21-.40% vanadium, .31-.70% zirconium; impurities limited to: less than to 0.6% Si, less than 0.8% Fe, less than .2% zinc, less than 0.1% Mn, less than 0.2% Ni, and the remainder being essentially aluminum. There is an absence of titanium, cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, boron, tantalum, and niobium. The alloy has, at room temperature, a UTS of about 61 ksi, a YS of about 49 ksi, a tensile elongation of about 6%, and tensile modulus elasticity of about 11.5 MSi, a compressive yield strength of about 53 ksi, a compressive modulus of elasticity of about 18 MSi; high temperature physical properties at 500 o F, after 1000 hours exposure to 500 o F, comprise a tensile strength of 33 ksi or greater, a tensile yield strength of 23 ksi or greater, a tensile elongation of about 9%, and tensile modulus of elasticity of 10 msi. The alloy is fabricated by a) squeeze casting an aluminum alloy melt of such character; (b) extracting the solidified casting from the die and heat treating the casting to dissolve all alloying elements (i.e., 995-1018 o F for 7-20 hours); and (c) ageing the solution treated casting to achieve improved strength characteristics (i.e., in the range of 340-400 o F for 5-20 hours).

Plastic molded articles having low friction and excellent wear resistance are produced by treating the surface of the plastic article with an aqueous solution of an inorganic fluoride such as hydrogen fluoride. Plastic articles which can be made in accordance with the invention include plastic brake pistons, bearings, motors and drives, commutators, slip ring alternators for DC drive motors, thrust washers, spacers and reactors, clutch plates, electrical switching equipment with sliding parts, gears, pulleys for belt drives, such as cog belt pulleys, V-belt pulleys and poly V-belt pulleys, gas meter discs, and the like. In addition to the treatment step, the plastic articles are neutralized, washed and dried.

Afin d'atteindre ces niveaux l'ensemble à piston (76) de l'invention comprend un élément de piston (78) en acier ayant une partie cylindrique supérieure (96) d'un diamètre ''D'' et une hauteur de compression ''CH''. Le rapport entre la hauteur de compression ''CH'' et le diamètre ''D'' étant situé dans la plage comprise entre 60 % et 45 %. Ledit élément de piston (78) est de préférence forgé puis usiné à des dimensions pouvant être commandées avec précision. De plus, l'ensemble à piston (78) est de préférence du type articulé et comprend une jupe (80) de piston en aluminium forgé, reliée à l'élément de piston (78) par l'intermédiaire d'un maneton commun (82). Les constructeurs de moteurs cherchent également à réduire la taille du moteur tout en maintenant la puissance, ainsi qu'à améliorer la consommation de carburant et à réduire les émissions. L'élément de piston (76) de l'invention constitue une solution simple et économique satisfaisant la relation entre la puissance accrue et une taille réduite. In order to improve the suction efficiency and the cycle efficiency, a heat-insulating engine structure (10) of the invention has a planar and thin-walled piston head surface portion (4) of a ceramics material to be exposed to combustion gases. A combustion chamber (15) is formed not on the side of the piston head but on the side of a cylinder head. Namely, the piston head is defined by the cooperation of a cylinder head bottom wall portion (26) having a lowered central portion and a raised outer peripheral portion (18) and a cylinder liner upper portion (28) including an upper tubular part of a substantially square cross-section and a lower cylindrical part. The cylinder head bottom wall portion has an inclined surface radially upwardly extending from the central portion to the outer peripheral portion. Intake and exhaust valves (21, 27) are associated with valve seats formed in the inclined surface. A fuel injection nozzle (25) is disposed substantially centrally of the cylinder head bottom wall portion. The sides of the square tubular part are operative to agitate a swirl to facilitate uniform mixture of fuel and air thereby assuring that the fuel and air are mixed instantaneously in a zone adjacent to the top dead center of the piston.
