Provided are methods and systems that characterize a property of a particle suspended in a fluid sample in a label-free manner. Detection elements are provided fluidically adjacent upstream and downstream from a modulation element. Fluid sample containing particles flows across a first detection element and a first particle parameter detected for each particle that passes the first detection element or a first aggregate particle parameter for a plurality of particles that pass the first detection element. The particles flow from the first detection element to a first modulation element, wherein the first modulation element effects a change in a property of the particles flowing past the first modulation element. A second detection element then detects the particle parameter again or a second aggregate particle parameter for a plurality of particles that pass the second detection element. Comparing the first and second particle or aggregate parameters thereby characterizes the particle property.

The present invention relates to a liquid metal cleanliness analyzer comprising: an insulating wall comprising a passage; a first electrode disposed proximate to a first side of the insulating wall; at least one additional electrode proximate to a second side of the insulating wall, wherein the second side is opposite of the first side; a computation apparatus; and a current supply system connected to the first electrode and to the at least one additional electrode, wherein: the computation apparatus is configured to measure a voltage between the first electrode and the at least one additional electrode while liquid metal flows through the passage; when a current measured falls below a predetermined level, the liquid metal cleanliness analyzer is configured to suspend measurement of the voltage while the current supply system is adjusted to return the current to an initial value; and the measurement is restarted after the current is returned to the initial value. A method of analyzing nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) in a blood sample and further enumerating NRBCs is disclosed. The method includes lysing a first aliquot and a second aliquot of a blood sample separately with a first lysing reagent system and a second lysing reagent system; measuring the first sample mixture in a flow cell by DC, RF, and light scatter measurements; measuring cell distributions and counting remaining blood cells in the second sample mixture by DC impedance measurements in a non-focused flow aperture; analyzing blood cell distribution patterns obtained from measuring the first sample mixture and from measuring the second sample mixture respectively; and further performing a combined analysis to differentiate NRBCs from other cell types and determine numbers of NRBCs in the blood sample.
