A method and apparatus for refueling a vehicle powered by an electrochemical engine comprises a fuel fill pocket (52) accessible to the exterior of the vehicle and having an interior end (53) with an opening to a hydrogen refueling line (56). The hydrogen refueling line extends between the fuel fill pocket and a storage tank (22) in the engine. A fuel fill door (50) conceals the fuel fill pocket when closed and operates to open for access to the fuel fill pocket. A nozzle (66) is operably connected to a refueling station and is slideably receivable within the fuel fill pocket. The nozzle has a hydrogen input line (68). The refueling apparatus has a flow communication means (96/98) to ensure the hydrogen input line is in flow communication with the hydrogen refueling line for delivering hydrogen. Mating communication ports in the nozzle and the fuel fill pocket operate to send and receive electronic signals therebetween and to a controller (102) for controlling the operation of refueling. The controller ensures that the nozzle is properly inserted before initiating refueling and verifies that line pressures are below a minimum set level before the nozzle may be removed from the fuel fill pocket.

The system (1) includes a memory (8) in which curves (A, B) are stored which define the conditions for each gear change, corresponding to at least two reference styles of driving, sensors (S1-S6) for operating parameters of the motor vehicle, and second processing devices (5, 6, 7) set up to estimate the value of a first index (IM) which identifies the kind of driving of the motor vehicle and, respectively, the value of a second index (IS) which defines the manner or style of driving of the driver, and a processing and control unit (ECU). This unit (ECU) is set up to perform a learning procedure in which it acquires and memorises the value of the second index (IS) corresponding to the manner or style of driving of the driver during a test drive with manual control of the gears, and generates and memorises maps of modified curves (C) defining the conditions for the gear changes according to a personalised style of driving from among the said reference methods, and an automatic control procedure in which it controls actuators (3, 4) in order automatically to effect the gear changes based on the modified curves (C) generated during the learning procedure.
