    Such polycarbonates exhibit excellent optical properties such as high birefringence, and are useful as materials for optical devices.
    Also, a process for preparing the polycarbonates and novel dihydric phenols which can be used as materials for the polycarbonates are disclosed.

    摘要: Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von 4,4'-Dihydroxydiphenylether durch Dehydratisierung von Hydrochinon mit Sulfonsäuren oder Schwefelsäure als Katalysatoren bei erhöhten Temperaturen. Das Dehydratisierungsprodukt wird bei 80 bis 110°C mit einem Überschuß Wasser verrührt. Die dabei nicht gelösten höher kondensierten Nebenprodukte werden abgetrennt, und aus dem erhaltenen Filtrat läßt man den gewünschten Ether auskristallisieren.
