Abstract:
Novel polymers comprising polyolefin-substituted amines grafted with aromatic N-containing monomers such as aniline, have been found to provide oil soluble polymers which have dispersant and antioxidant properties in oleaginous compositions, including fuel and lubricating oils, and also which are useful in electrical applications. These materials are formed by a process which comprises: (a) contacting an amine compound having at least two reactive nitrogen moieties with at least one long chain hydrocarbon-substituted reactant in an amount and under conditions sufficient to form a N-containing polymer adduct containing reactive amine groups, and (b) contacting the N-containing polymer adduct with at least one aromatic N-containing monomer under polymerization conditions to graft said N-containing polymer adduct with aromatic N-containing polymer segments. The long chain hydrocarbon-substituted reactant can comprise materials such as (i) long chain hydrocarbons substituted with mono- or dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or ester groups; (ii) halogenated long chain hydrocarbons; (iii) mixtures of formaldehyde and a long chain hydrocarbyl substituted phenol; and (iv) mixtures of formaldehyde and a reaction product formed by reaction of long chain hydrocarbons substituted with mono- or dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or ester groups and an amino-substituted, optionally hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a composition of matter useful as a multifunctional viscosity improver-dispersant for ole- aginous compositions, particularly lubricating oil compositions, com- prising at least one adduct or reaction product of (A) ethylene copolymer, preferably ethylene propylene copolymer of at least 15,000 number average molecular weight grafted with monounsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid material; and (B) amido-amine or thioamido-amine com- prising reaction product of at least one amine, preferably polyamine, and an alpha, beta-unsaturated compound represented by the formula wherein X is sulfur or oxygen, Y is -OR 4 , -SR 4 , or and R', R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are independently selected from hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, and substituted hydrocarbyl. The present invention is also directed to oleaginous compositions and concentrates, particularly lubricating oil compositions and concentrates, containing said nitrogen containing carboxylic acid material grafted high molecular weight ethylene copolymer adduct.
Abstract:
A lubricating oil composition for metal rolling is described, comprising (a) an oily component comprising one or more of fats and oils, mineral oils, and fatty acid esters, and (b) a dispersant comprising one or more of polyethyleneimine/epoxy compound adducts, polyethylene polyamine/epoxy compound adducts, fatty acid esters of the adducts, and salts of the adducts and the fatty acid esters. This composition is useful for rolling metals under high shear and high rolling speed conditions.
Abstract:
A lubricating oil composition comprising at least 50 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of a polymer comprising units (a) and one or both units (b) and (c):
-N(COR 1 )(CH 2 ) x - (a)
-NH(CH 2 ) y - (b)
-N(CH 2 CH 2-k (CH 3 ) k COOR 2 )(CH 2 ) z (c)
where the total number (n) of units (a), (b) and (c) is an integer between 4 and 500; wherein x, y and z are independently 2 or 3; wherein k is zero or 1. The polymer shows good solubility in the lubricating oil and provides friction modification. A method of synthesising a polymer is also disclosed.
