Novel compositions for the production of interferons such as interferon-α 2a, interferon-α 2b, or interferon-β 1a (IFN-α 2a, IFN-α 2b, or IFN-β 1a) are provided. The compositions comprise components of vectors, such as a vector backbone, a promoter, and a gene of interest that encodes an interferon such as IFN-α 2a, IFN-α 2b, or IFN-β 1a, and the vectors comprising these components. In certain embodiments, these vectors are transposon-based vectors. Also provided are methods of making these compositions and methods of using these compositions for the production of an interferon such as IFN-α 2a, IFN-α 2b, or IFN-β 1a.

Colorimetric and fluorometric methods are disclosed for the rapid, accurate, selective, and inexpensive detection of homocysteine, or of homocysteine and cysteine, or of cysteine. The methods may be employed with materials that are readily available commercially. The novel methods are selective for homocysteine, for cysteine, or for total homocysteine and cysteine, and do not cross-react substantially with chemically-related species such as glutathione. The homocysteine-selective method does not have substantial cross-reactivity to the very closely related species cysteine. The cysteine-selective method does not have substantial cross-reactivity to the very closely related species homocysteine. The methods may be used, for example, in a direct assay of human blood plasma for homocysteine levels.

A method of preparing a modified corn steep liquor product from a corn steep liquor which includes suspended solids, high molecular weight compounds, phytic acid, and metal values includes the steps of: subjecting the corn steep liquor to ultrafiltration to remove the suspended solids and high molecular weight compounds; treating the product of step (a) with a phytase enzyme to convert the phytic acid to inositol-mono-phosphate; treating the product of step (b) with an acid phosphatase enzyme to convert the inositol-mono-phosphate to myo-inositol; adjusting the pH of the product of step (c) to from 7 to 9 inclusive using a soluble base which causes most or all of the Mg values to precipitate, and removing the precipitate; and contacting the product of step (d) with a strong acid cation chromatographic resin to produce a first fraction containing most of the remaining metal values, and a second fraction containing most of the myo-inositol, the second fraction being the modified corn steep liquor product.

The present invention relates, in general, to a method of enhancing the production performance of avians, by administering to a bird a heterologous protein comprised of inhibin protein, or a fragment thereof, and a carrier protein. The present invention also relates to a method of enhancing the production performance of avians, by administering to a bird a fusion gene product comprising a gene encoded for the expression of alpha-subunit avian inhibin protein, or a fragment thereof, and a gene encoded for the expression of a carrier protein. An effective amount of the heterologous protein or fusion gene product is administered to an animal such that an immunological response occurs in the animal against the heterologous protein. The present invention further relates to the above heterologous protein and fusion gene product, and to methods of producing the same.
