A vertebral body replacement device (5000) includes a body member (5100) and a central rod member (5200) having two threaded portions and configured to be operatively associated with the body member (5100). The device also includes a first end member (5300) and a second end member (5400) with the end members configured to threadingly engage the threaded portions of the central rod member (5200). The body member (5100) and the two end members (5300,5400) are further constructed to inhibit rotational movement of the two end members when the device is positioned within a space within a spine as the two end members will engage the adjacent respective vertebral bodies following rotational actuation of the central rod member (5200) causing the end members (5300,5400) to move in an axial direction relative to the body member (5100), thereby allowing the two end members to apply a force to the two vertebral bodies. A surgical instrument and method for using the device are also disclosed.

The aim of the invention is to restore the mobility of an articular end (2) of a bone (3) of a patient by means of a reconstruction implant. This implant (1), which permits reconstruction both of bone and of cartilage, comprises a grated framework (10) and a sheet (20) made of a biological tissue material, this sheet firmly covering one face (11) of the framework, while the opposite face (12) is designed to be pressed rigidly against, and firmly joined to, the end of the bone.

The invention is directed toward a cartilage repair assembly comprising a shaped allograft two piece construct with a demineralized cancellous cap and a mineralized cylindrical base member defining a blind bore with a through going transverse bore intersecting the blind bore. The demineralized cancellous cap has a cylindrical top portion and a smaller diameter cylindrical stem extending away from the top portion which fits into the blind bore of the mineralized base member. The cap stem defines a transverse through going bore which is aligned with the through going bore of the base member to receive a cylindrical cortical pin holding the cap within the base member. The shaped structure is dimensioned to fit in a drilled bore in a cartilage defect area so that the assembly engages the side wall of the drilled bore in an interference fit.

An implant device (50) for cartilage regeneration in loading-bearing regions is formed of resorbable polymeric materials. The implant (50) is designed such that load is transmitted from the articulating surface of the bone platform (40) through the implant (50) to the entire area of subchondral bone (45) of the bone platform (40). Application of load in this manner results in reduced subchondral bone resorption, leading to joint stabilization and maintenance of normal joint biomechanics. The implant (50) allows for the incorporation therein of a resorbable scaffold or matrix material.

The plug helps to prevent plastic particles from a plastic bearing seated within the cup, from migrating through the aperture into the bone cavity or acetabulum surrounding the acetabular cup.
