An industrial vehicle has a body frame (1a) and an axle (10) pivotally supported by the body frame. The vehicle also includes a damper (13) located between the body frame and the axle. An passage supplies oil to the damper in accordance with tilting of the axle and receives oil discharged from the damper. A control valve (14) is located in the passage to control oil flow into and out of the damper. A tilt angle sensor detects the tilt angle of the axle. A controller controls the control valve in accordance with locking conditions for locking and unlocking the axle. When the locking conditions are not satisfied, the controller monitors whether the tilt angle of the axle detected by the tilt angle sensor exceeds a predetermined maximum tilt angle. The controller locks the axle if the tilt angle exceeds the maximum tilt angle, and thereafter unlocks the axle if the forces on the rear axle tend to decrease the tilt angle.

A controller (29) detects the running state from detection values θ and V of a sensor (21) for detecting the tire angle of the rear wheels and a sensor (22) for detecting a vehicle speed, and detects the load state from detection values H and w of a height sensor (27) and a pressure sensor (28). When a determination value derived from the detection values θ and V becomes equal to or greater than a set value which is determined in accordance with the detection values H and w, an electromagnetic changeover valve (14) of a dumper (13) is switched to carry out control to lock the rear axle. When a sensor is diagnoses as failing, maximum values θmax and Vmax or the like are selected as most severe detection values. Even one of a set of sensors fails, therefore, the rear axle will not be locked as long as the vehicle runs in such a way that the detection value of the other sensor allows the determination value to be smaller than the set value.

The present invention refers to a bump range reducing device for axle (3) suspensions (2) of a road-rail intermodular semitrailer used for levelling the semitrailer at a predetermined position during piggybacking onto railway wagons, which includes a sprang element (4) rotatably secured to the frame (5) of the semitrailer on at least one of its axles (3), and has operative ends (6,7) fitted in such a way so that they may be joined to the frame (5) and the axle (3). Furthermore, the device (1) includes actuator means (8) of the rotation of the element (4) in relation to the frame (5) from an active position to an inactive position. The active position corresponds to the piggybacking onto railway wagons, in which the element (4) is placed between the frame (5) and the axle (3) in such a way as to reduce the maximum reciprocal approach to a predetermined value so that when the suspension (2) reaches the predetermined value, it is inhibited. The inactive position corresponds to the road use of the semitrailer, in which the operative ends (6,7) of the said element (4) are detached from the frame (5) and from the axle (3).

A vehicle air suspension has control means including an ECU (27) and a valve block (28) operatively connected to air springs (15, 16, 17, 18) to maintain the ride height between sprung and unsprung parts of the vehicle adjacent to each air spring at a particular setting. The control means provides for each air spring a respective up signal tending to increase the ride height and a respective down signal tending to decrease the ride height. If the vehicle becomes partly supported by direct contact between the chassis (21) and the ground (belly-out), this is detected by monitoring signals from the ECU to ride height control valves in the valve block. If a down signal exists for more than a predetermined time the down signal is ceased and normal conditions are restored by providing a controlled re-inflation and balancing of the air springs.

A vehicle air suspension can be controlled between a Standard setting of ride height and a lower, Kneel, setting. Movement to or from the Kneel setting is frozen if a door is opened or if the footbrake is applied. Alteration to the Kneel setting is prevented except when the vehicle is stationary. The suspension reverts to the Standard ride height if the vehicle is driven off or the handbrake is released. Movement of the suspension to or from a lower or higher setting is carried out sequentially to prevent headlamp dazzle. If the vehicle becomes partly supported by direct contact between the chassis and the ground (belly-out) this is detected by monitoring signals to ride height control valves and by providing a controlled re-inflation and balancing of the air springs.
