The invention relates to a hybrid drive mechanism comprising an electric motor. A flywheel having a built-in controllable electromagnetic clutch with a pressed-in free-wheel is mounted on the electric motor drive shaft. Said free-wheel is also mounted on the drive shaft. A fuel engine is connected to the drive shaft, however, via a shaft which is discontinuous through a free-wheel housing. The drive to the wheels results via an armature flange of the electromagnetic clutch which is mounted on a hollow shaft.

A control system and method for controlling the operation of a flywheel type power delivery system, such as used in an automotive vehicle. A predetermined maximum vehicle speed limit dictates the operating speed range for the flywheel. Desirably, this speed range is as low as possible so as to minimize spin losses. Above a threshold vehicle speed of approximately 45 miles per hour, the flywheel is completely uncoupled from the system and vehicle propulsion is provided by direct coupling of the engine through the continuously variable ratio transmission (CVT) to the vehicle driving wheels.

Each of the motors is coupled to an associated one of the plurality of traction elements. Each of the motors is driven by the associated traction element in a first mode, and drives the associated traction element in a second mode. The energy storage system includes a shaft, a rotor secured to the shaft, a stator extending around the rotor, and a flywheel coupled to the shaft for rotation therewith. In the first mode, rotation of the motors causes rotation of the flywheel to store kinetic energy. In the second mode, rotation of the rotor and the flywheel discharges kinetic energy to drive the motors.
