This application describes a spinal surgical retractor. The retractor assembly includes a retractor body, first and second arms, and first and second anchor blades. The first and second anchor blades capture a portion of bone anchors to anchor the retractor to the anatomy. The first and second anchor blades are removably attached to the left and right arms, respectively. The housing is able to rotate controlled by a splay unit. The blade portion has a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end includes an integral pivot arm such that the distal end is divided into a static arm and a pivot arm. The distal end of the static arm includes a static foot extending therefrom and the distal end of the pivot arm includes a pivot foot extending therefrom to receive a neck of the bone anchor.

Disc prostheses, particularly for use in the lumbar region of the spine are provided. The disc prosthesis includes a core of elastomeric material provided within an inner component of fabric. The inner component is provided within an outer component of fabric. By providing a smooth inner contact surface between the inner component and the core, movement between the inner and outer components is facilitated in preference to movement between the inner component and core. Core abrasion is thus avoided. The use of an inner component and an outer component also means that the characteristics of each can be optimised to meet different aims.

The invention is directed to a bone plate system. The bone plate system comprises a base plate (14) having two generally parallel elongated screw slots (30) extending therethrough. Two bone screws (16) are provided that are capable of securing the base plate to a bone by insertion through the screw slots into the bone. Each bone screw has a screw head (15) and a threaded portion (17) extending therefrom. An interference device (8) is attached to the base plate and retains the bone screws while permitting the bone screws to toggle and to controllably slide in the screw slots of the base plate. This design is particularly useful for joining adjacent vertebral bodies, as it permits controlled settling of the vertebral bodies, thereby enhancing the healing process.
