A traction drive fluid is provided which has a flash point of 150°C or higher, a high coefficient of traction at high temperatures, and excellent flow properties at low temperatures.

Traction drive fluid compositions, obtained by mixing (A) a base oil for traction drives having a quaternary carbon atom and/or an alicyclic structure in the molecule with (B) at least one polymer which is selected from among the following polymers (1) to (3) and has a weight-average molecular weight of 8,000 to 40,000: (1) hydrocarbon polymers which each contain as a constituent at least 10 mole% of a monomer having a cyclic structure, (2) hydrocarbon polymers which each contain at least 25 % of quaternary carbon atoms in the backbone chain, and (3) products of hydrogenation of the polymers (1) and (2). The traction drive fluid compositions are improved in viscosity index without lowering the traction coefficient to a level lower than that of the base oil and are excellent in shear stability.

A lubricating oil composition for a continuously variable transmission which comprises (A) a base oil comprising a hydrocarbon compound having a cohesive energy density at 40°C of 0.180 GPa or more and having a kinematic viscosity at 40°C of 5 to 150 mm /s and, added to the base oil, one or more combinations selected from (B) a phosphoric acid ester having an alkyl group containing a thioether bond and/or (C) a phosphoric acid ester and an amine salt thereof, and an overbased calcium sulfonate. The above lubricating oil composition can improve the power transmission capacity of various types, such as a metal belt type, a chain type and a traction drive type of CVT and also can sustain the improved power transmission capacity.

A lubricating oil additive which comprises either a succinimide compound represented by the following general formula (1) or a product of the boronizing of the succinimide compound, the succinimide compound being obtained by reacting (a) succinic acid substituted by C6-30 alkenyl or alkyl or the anhydride of the substituted acid with (b) a polyalkylene polyamine at least 5 mol% of which has a ring structure at an end. The additive is suitable for use in the preparation of a lubricating oil composition capable of retaining anti-shudder performance for long without suffering a decrease in transmission torque volume or causing a decrease in the coefficient of friction between metals. (In the formula, R is C6-30 alkenyl or alkyl; m is an integer of 2 to 4; n is an integer of 0 to 3; and A is either a ring structure which is the same as that present at an end of the polyalkylene polyamine or a mixture of the ring structure and an amino group.)
