Described herein is a peptide, referred to as a GlycoTag peptide, that includes repeats of an N-linked glycosylation sequon that is naturally present in C. jejuni. The GlycoTag peptide can be in a purified and isolated form following expression of a construct encoding the GlycoTag peptide or it is, in whole or in part, a synthetic peptide. The GlycoTag peptide is typically used with glycans attached thereto. The GlycoTag peptide can be used alone or in combination with different proteins or peptides and can be incorporated into a chimeric protein or peptide for use in the development of antigen/antibody delivery systems, the preparation of vaccines, pharmaceuticals and diagnostic tests, and research into therapies for countering Campylobacter and other infections.

Micro- and nano-sized particles, agglomerates and fibers are generated from high molecular weight water-soluble biopolymers applying supercritical fluid technology. A method of producing micro- or nanoparticles from an aqueous solution of a high molecular weight biopolymer includes the step of spraying the aqueous solution together with a mixture of a compressible gas and a water-soluble co-solvent/antisolvent into a pressurized chamber. The method may be adapted to impregnate the micro- or nanoparticles with a bioactive material. A method for microencapsulating a bioactive material with a biopolymer is also provided.

The present invention is related to the discovery that serpina3n, a secreted protein, binds to and inhibits granzyme B activity. The invention thus provides cells that include a polynucleotide encoding a granzyme B inhibitory serpin, pharmaceutical compositions including a granzyme B inhibitory serpin or a polynucleotide encoding a granzyme B inhibitory serpin, methods for treating a patient in need of immunosuppression by administration of a granzyme B inhibitory serpin, and methods of transplanting cells (e.g., islet cells) expressing a granzyme B inhibitory serpin.
