A system for supporting and strengthening a damaged bone that includes inner cancellous bone and outer cortical bone is described. The system comprises a cannula that is adapted to establish an access path to inside bone,a hollow balloon body comprising a flexible, non-elastic material that is capable of inflation from a collapsed configuration, when it is adapted for passage through the cannula into bone, to an expanded configuration. The balloon body has a predetermined size in the expanded configuration that is selected to compress at least a portion of the inner cancellous bone into the outer cortical bone to strengthen the outer cortical bone. The non-elastic material of the balloon body is capable of supporting the outer cortical bone when the balloon body is in the expanded configuration and the balloon body defines an inner passage for allowing an inflating fluid to pass into the body. The system also comprises means for scaling the inner passage of the balloon body when the balloon is in the expanded configuration to provide a support structure for the outer cortical bonc.

A customized prosthesis, or instrument, for medical/dental applications is provided which replicates the desired bone-graft, tooth, or tool, being replaced. The dimensions of the prosthesis, or instrument, are determined by mathematically interpolating key-points that characterize a specific part. A computer controlled machine then cuts the desired part out of a pre-fabricated blank, directly at the site of operation. Methods of the invention relate to selecting the type of part being replaced, identifying and measuring the coordinates of key-points for that part, and initializing the automated machining process. Also, special supporting devices that include pre-fabricated features common between certain parts, are used in order to facilitate the machining process. The identification of key-points is done by comparing a schematic drawing of the type of part being replaced to the actual part. A grid is then used to measure the coordinates for those key-points.

An intercalary implant has two stem members and a collar. One stem member includes a stem portion to be received in the intramedullary canal of a native end portion of a long bone and a threaded male portion to be outside of the intramedullary canal. The second stem member also includes a stem portion to be received in the intramedullary canal of the opposite native end portion of the long bone. The second stem member has a spacer portion and a shoulder to be outside of the intramedullary canal. The collar has an annular base portion with an opening and a cylindrical female threaded portion. When assembled, collar connects the first and second stem members and the implant spans a gap in the shaft of the long bone. The parts can be assembled without distracting the native end bone portions in the proximal-distal direction to prevent damage to soft tissue around the native end bone portions.
