An ultrasonic welding system includes a motion control system that is coupled to and that causes controlled movement of an ultrasonic welding stack (10), in accordance with control inputs that are based on one or more control signals that are received from one or more sensors. The motion control system initiates a welding operation, subsequent to which an initial motion delay occurs until a predetermined condition is satisfied. Subsequently, in response to the predetermined condition being satisfied, the ultrasonic welding stack (10) is caused to move in accordance with a weld profile. Subsequently, in response to an occurrence of a predetermined delay initiating condition, the ultrasonic welding stack (10) is caused to stop motion and to maintain a stationary position. Subsequently, in response to an occurrence of a predetermined delay terminating condition, motion of the ultrasonic welding stack (10) is resumed in accordance with the weld profile.

Advanced ultrasonic welding components of U.S. Patent Application 12/925,652 are readily incorporated into new form-fill-seal machines, but owners of existing machines utilizing heat-seal stations were unsuccessful at swapping the sealing packages. Retrofit kits (10) to replace heat sealing stations with advanced ultrasonic sonotrode (13) and anvil 812) include: a housing (20,21,22,23,24); a linear rail (50) fixed thereto; first and second bearing carriages (61,62) being slidable upon the rail; and first and second fluidic muscles (16,17). Each of the fluidic muscles is mounted with a first end fixed to a respective housing wall (21,22), and a second end fixed to a respective bearing carriage, permitting actuation of each carriage through pressurization and depressurization of the muscles. The advanced anvil and sonotrode may be secured to respective carriages. In-line arrangements of anvil/sonotrode, bearing carriages, the first fluidic muscle, and the second fluidic muscle provides a narrow profile, permitting side-by-side kit installations for retrofits accomplishing duplex sealing on a horizontal machine.

The invention relates to a method for use in constructing a garment (25) including elastic, in a processing system, as one of a series of consecutive workpieces in a continuous web, the workpieces having front and back body portions separated by a crotch portion, the method including, with respect to respective workpieces, the steps of: (a) stretching an elastic; (b) incorporating the stretched elastic into the continuous web in stretched condition; and (c) subsequently relieving stretch in the elastic at the crotch portion of each respective workpiece in the web, while maintaining the stretch in the elastic at the front and back body portions of each respective workpiece, by applying ultrasonic energy to the outer surface of the workpiece at at least one selected locus at the crotch portion, sufficient to effect severing of the elastic without corresponding severing of the continuous web. The invention is a mounting system for a vibrational element. The vibrational element has a longitudinal axis, an outer surface and an axial displacement node. The mounting system includes an isolation member which has an isolation surface, an isolating body, and an engaging portion. The engaging portion is immovably secured to the isolation member and extends radially inward from the isolation body at a point radially opposite the isolation surface. The engaging portion is disposed so as to engage to the outer surface of the vibrational element. Radial displacements of the vibration element are substantially decoupled from the isolation surface through the engaging portion.
