An oil control valve system according to one example of the present disclosure incorporates a common or interchangeable oil control valve at distinct locations of an engine to direct operation of switching mechanisms over sets of three cylinders. In another aspect of the present disclosure, four interchangeable oil control valves are used in a six-cylinder engine. Utilizing interchangeable oil control valves minimizes design costs, reduces assembly time, lessens repair or replacement burdens, and allows for enhanced engine performance.

Water jackets (50A) are formed, respectively, in a cylinder body (41) and a cylinder head (42) such that coolant flows through the cylinder body (42) and the cylinder head (42) independently of each other. A thermostat is mounted on a front wall surface of a cylinder section and is capable of selecting a condition in which the water jackets (50A) directly communicate with each other or a condition in which the water jackets (50A) communicate with each other via a radiator (52).

Zum Heizen eines Katalysators, zum Ausräumen von Schwefelablagerungen in einem Katalysator sowie zum Beschleunigen des Ansprechens eines Abgasturboladers wird ein Verfahren zum Betreiben einer mehrzylindrigen Brennkraftmaschine mit Benzindirekteinspritzung in die Zylinder vorgeschlagen, bei welchem zur Nachverbrennung des Benzins innerhalb des Abgastraktes wenigstens ein Zylinder von Zyklus zu Zyklus abwechselnd bei einem Lambdawert größer oder kleiner oder gegebenenfalls gleich 1.0 betrieben wird, und wenigstens ein anderer Zylinder von Zyklus zu Zyklus abwechselnd bei einem Lambdawert kleiner oder größer oder gegebenenfalls gleich 1.0 betrieben wird. Dadurch kann innerhalb des Abgastraktes der Brennkraftmaschine eine Nachverbrennung stattfinden, die ohne zusätzliche Einspritz- und Zündvorrichtung, ohne Sekundärluftpumpe sowie ohne aufwendige temperaturabhängige Regelung auskommt.

A multiple crankshaft IC engine (50) which allows a relatively large number of relatively small combustion cylinders, having pistons (60) to drive a common output shaft (28) by crankshaft pinions (54) to yield a relatively high power-to-weight ratio. Engine clusters are formed by layers of these engines (50) arranged into clusters of eight or more and coupled together with further pinions about a further central gear to a single further output shaft. The engine (50) has perfect balance due to the disposition of the crankshafts (56) so that the movement of pistons (60) and their associated crankshafts (56) and connecting rods (58) generate reactionary forces that cancel each other out. The engine (50) also has a rotary intake valve in the form of ports in the output shaft (28) for communication with the pistons (60) as the output shaft (28) rotates.
