This invention relates to SiC porous ceramic material and its preparation method and belongs to the porous ceramic material preparation field. SiC aggregate, sintering additive zirconia, pore-forming agent activated carbon, polymer adhesives and reinforcing agent SiC whiskers are mixed together by a certain ratio. After the mixture is molded, dried and sintered, a type of porous ceramic material can be prepared. The porous ceramic material prepared by the invention has high strength, high porosity, good thermal shock resistance, low sintering temperature and other advantages. It can be used as the high-temperature flue gas filtration material and the carrier material for vehicle exhaust gas purification.

A method of vacuum forming of aqueous, fibrous slurries and products produced thereby are disclosed. The method entails forming an aqueous slurry of ceramic fiber, cationic starch and silica sol. The silica has, based on total weight of the sol, about 50 % silica having a particle size range of from about 7 nm to about 200 nm and a specific surface area of about 100 m2/gm to about 10 m2/gm. The slurry is passed through a porous screen under a vacuum pressure depositing the solids content onto the screen to produce high strength products.

The body has a composition that includes: (a) Si3N4; (b) a glassy grain boundary phase containing oxygen, nitrogen, Mg, Y, Si, Zr, and at least one of Ti and Al; and (c) a second crystalline phase containing ZrO2; and (d) crystalline phases of metal zirconium silicide and/or metal zirconium silicon nitride. The ceramic exhibits high fracture toughness and high fracture strength and has a density at least 98 % of theoretical.
